Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ...

Here's some things that you can do to try to correct it. They only seem to work for less than 50% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, they're worth a try:

Camera powered on, lenses extended, then got an E18 error message. Won't take pics, lenses won't retract. Tried charging battery, no difference. Powers up, powers off, that's it.

Canon E18 error happens when the lens gets stuck while trying to extend.

There is a step-by-step tutorial (with pictures) for fixing this yourself on this website, which is too long to re-post here.

You can also try tapping the USB port lightly against a hard surface, and using compressed air to blow out the area between the camera body and the lens turret.

If you can't fix it yourself and decide to send the camera back for repair, be warned that Canon has horrible customer support and response time. You might want to consider replacing the camera instead.

E18 error message on the Canon A400

Hi there,

The solution for your problem is too much to type here. So, I'm going to give you a link that explains many problems with lenses and how you can correct issues. Please note that some of these can and might cause your camera harm, and should only be tried if you can't pay for a repair, and/or ready to junk it. But it just may help you.

When I try to zoom, screen goes black and "E18" appears in bottom corner

I won't say this is a solution but to prevent the lens retraction E18 message which seems to be common with Canon zoom lenses, I put the extension tube on mine. Sometimes I put a polarizer lens on it but usually I just leave it on to protect the lens when it is on. I have dropped it (on the carpeting at home) and never had a problem. If you have a Canon with a zoom lens, get a lens hood for it ASAP!! My wife's A520 has one on hers too. No problems.
There are lots of other places on the web with suggested fixes. Keep looking and keep enjoying this camera. Merry Christmas all.

E18 lens will not come out

E18 Error Fixed Canon PowerShot A520 My lense would not come out and would give me the E18 error and shut down.

I just pressed the power button on and held it down while extending the telescopic zoom lense. It made a horrible sound but the next thing I knew the lense extended out and the camera worked again!

After E18 fixes...lense got in..but does not come out

You can just head to darntoothysam.com and search for "E:18" without the quotes. You won't see your model listed, but you can buy any one of those model repairs and follow the steps to get your A510 fixed.

E18 Message - Beeping.

The E18 error message relates to a problem with the zooming mechanism (lens would not retract or extended) Press the power button on and hold it down while extending and twisting the telescopic zoom lens. It might fix your problem. In any case it could not make it worse Good luck!

E18

This error is cause by a few things. First you need better power, how old is the unit? The battery pack may need replaced, the lens mechanism draws alot of power and sometimes if the flash is charging and the lenses are moving it struggles for power and shuts down. Another thing that can cause this error is jammed gears in the lens. This can be cause from an impact (dropped unit) or debris in the lens mechanism (sand, dirt, dust) the gears are so small and as is dust anything can blow in there and get jammed in the unit to jam it. I have got units to function again by tapping on the front of the lens while repeatedly tapping on the front of the lens. The idea is to work the jam out and free the lens. The E18 means a stuck lens but the reason its stuck i canot tell with out looking at it. Tap on the front of the lens (the part that moves in and out like a telescope) or try and tap on the side while powering it on. If you know some one with a unit like yours try their battery before you get a new one. They are very power hungry and if your unit is a few years old it may be time for a new battery.
