Solved at last!!!
The problem isn't mechanical... I just realized that the "no paper" error posts when the software is trying to print to a paper size not supported by the printer. Go to Page Setup and make sure Paper Size is set to Letter.
In my case, the document I was trying to pring was set to Paper Size: Custom, probably because it was a scanned document and it didn't default to Size: Letter automatically. Hope this solution helps someone end their frustration...
That means the engine pcb has gone bad, around $300.00

actually the problem was a little tiny plastic thingy and a little tiny spring that popped out of place on the left side of the paper tray.. $90.00 -- which is not as much as 300.00 but still pretty expensive -- and that was with me taking the printer into a repair shop!
there are 2 actuators in the front that sense the paper. usually the bigger one is out of position, check to see if it can swing almost all the way in.
