The test page is an internal function. When you print from your computer thats an external function. So even though you can print the test page doesn't necessary mean you have established a good connection to your software that is trying to print.

Click on "START" lower left panel then "Control Panel" then "scanners and printers"

1. check to see if your printer is listed. If not you will need to add it.

2. check to see if there is a black circle with a check mark in it near the icon for your printer.....that means it is set as your default printer.

If your printer is listed and you still can't print it is most likely and cable/connection error or possibly the lack of software/drivers

My watermarks are printing as pink instead of gray, this started happening after I changed the black cartridge. I have not made changes to the original document, and normal text still prints as black

if that is a refilled cartridge, you might have a problem with the ink. try print something (text) in pure black , and grey only, and see waht happens, if does notprint, means the printer has hard time with that black cartridge.

Problem in color printing

I suggest making sure you installed them correctly, you can take them out and put them back in, it will ask you if you just replaced the cartridges one by one "select yes" if they are new, then try to print out a test sheet (which you do this through one of the options in your "menu" on the machine itself, it should be in your manual or you can look online in the Brother 240-MFC troubleshooting tips for printing, this just happened to me a few days ago and I got the answer there. So, when you print out the test sheet it will probably have colors missing and you say "NO' that it is NOT GOOD, and then it will do another cleaning and then print out another test sheet and hopefully it will work then, otherwise tell it NO again and have it do another cleaning, sometimes it does take a few times. This happened to me the other day when I replaced a black ink cartridge and I could not get ANYTHING TO PRINT, it kept coming out BLANK PAGES, so I went to the troubleshooting tips on the website and this was the advice I was given, it took THREE CLEANINGS and three test sheets before the black boxes printed out fully on the test sheet with none missing and ONLY THEN was I able to print successfully, GOOD LUCK TO YOU.

  • Slide the left edge guide until it locks in place at the guide mark. Next, adjust the right edge guide to match the width of your paper.
  • Slide a sheet of paper down firmly between the edge guides until it meets resistance. The printer loads the sheet automatically.
  • Press the PAUSE button. The printer begins printing the self test.
  • To stop printing temporarily, press the PAUSE button.
  • To end the self test, make sure the printer is not printing. Press LF/FF to eject the sheet; then turn off the printer.
