If you are in the USA
A compressor must be replaced by a certified refrigeration technician due to federal laws about proper handling of refrigerant. Also, all the joints must be soldered together with a torch, this is not a job for an amature.
If the fridge is less than 5 yrs old it should still be covered by the sealed system warranty and repaired at no charge.
I do know that the compressors for many of the SxS fridgidaires have been on back order due to a change to a different brand of replacement compressor. I recently waited 2 1/2 weeks on one I had ordered for a customer.
Once the tech has the compressor it is usually about a 2 hr job to replace, depending on the model.
Most of the parts dealers you contact will be hesitant to sell a compressor to someone that is not in the repair buisness, due to warranty claims if it is not installed properly. If you want to get one yourself you should be able to order it through Sears if you can't find it anywhere else. Go to, click on parts and enter the complete model number from the sticker in the refrigerator. If your model isn't listed you can call the 800 number on their site.
Hope this helps.

Why overload protector always cutting off and on?

The overload opens to protect the compressor. It operates in relation the internal or external temp of the compressor, not pressure. With this being said, is or has the compressor ran hot or in a location where temperature increase is possible? I installed a unit in my work van and had a similar issue. I even know better, so in order to control heat I have to install a fan to cool down the compressor. To help you the issue is heat, cooling the compressor will be the only fix if you didn't already do the damage to the compressor. Good Luck

Moving a refrigerator, freezer, or a combined refrigerator/freezer

Many people often stress over laying a refrigerator or freezer down in the back of a truck in order to move it. It has happened many, many, times that one of these appliances is laid down in order to move it, only to find that the compressor is ruined within a few hours after having plugged the unit back in.

By the same token, it is hard to just dead lift one of these appliances into the back of the truck without tipping the unit on it's side.

The purpose of this trick, or tip, is to avail anyone of what to look for should they need to move one of these unit's.

The reason the compressors fail is lack of oil in the compressor, caused when the compressor is oriented where the oil can go run into the disharge tube which is headed to the condensor coil. Most all modern domestic refrigeration compressors are built as where the enclosure is at the condensing pressure, which is why they get real hot when they run. The high pressure gas is easily pushed into the condensor as the compressor runs. But, if the appliance that the refrigerator is in is tipped over where that tube is on the bottom, then the oil runs in there as well. And when the appliance is stood back up, the piping usually does not allow all the oil to run back into the compressor. If the compressor is started before the oil has a chance to run back, then it get's pushed by the hot refrigerant further into the condensor coil, and on to the evaporator where it becomes cold and thick, to the point that it doesn't want to return to the compressor. This makes the compressor run on low oil, and after doing this for a few hours, it seizes up.

So, in order to lay the unit down, all you need to do is look at the compressor tubing. THere will be three pipes or tubes coming out of the compressor. On eis short, and crimped, then soldered closed. That is the service tubing where the unit is charged at the factory. One is the suction tubing that is the tube returning from inside the refrigerator. And the last is the hot gas discharge tubing, going to the condensor coil. In most all deomestic refrigerators, the suction and discharge tubes come off the same side of the compressor, which is the right hand side of the compressor as you stand at the back of the refrigerator looking at the compressor. That means if you lay the appliance on the left hand side, when standing in the same position, that oil will not have any place to run to, and will stay inside the compressor. You can lay or tilt the appliance on that side all you want, aadn never have any issues when starting the unit up after moving. And you can start tyhe unit up immediatley. You don't have to wait for 8 hours or anything.

Now, if you find you did an oops and laid the applicance the wrong way, then be concerned, there is a way to save the unit. Stand the unit up and wait for 6 hours or so before pluggin the unit in. Plug it in, and allow to run for 2-3 minutes. Unplug, and let it sit for 5-10 minutes. Repeat this for 8-10 times, then allow it to run for 30 minutes or so. DO this a couple of times, and you should be good to go.

We have Westinghouse apartment size fridges - some of them are making a very audible knocking sound when the compressers turns off. This does not happen in all the suites - we have 36 fridges. Thanks for...

Hi. Thisis a really simple fix. The compressor grommets are worn just from normal use. The compressor torques during start and hammers the compressor base against the mount. Then when the unit shuts off it generates a reverse torque and the base moves hammering the grommet against the mount.
The grommets are changed by usually remvong the mouting pin clips lifting the compressor ONE foot / grommet change at a time and then slide the locking pins back in place.

Have someone look at the grommets or get 1 compressor number and then go to any appliance parts source and either order or purchase your needed grommets.
It is not an expensive fix and they could all be done in less than1 day if someone was diligent. The biggest time consumer here is the process of opening the lower back panel. I would however plan on de-linting / cleaning with a vacuum and brush EACH units condensor coils and fan (if installed.)

Again remove ONE grommet (example) order replacements locally at the appliance parts source and install them.

About how much does it cost to repair/replace the compressor on a haier 21' (top freezer) refrigerator. can anyone perform warranty service (compressor in warranty, not labor)? model: htq21jaaww, less than...

Could run as high as $800, material and labor. Tech providing service must have manufacturer OK if he is not a factory authorized rep. Since Haier is Canadian, that could be hard to find in the US. Tech must also be EPA certified to handle refrigerant. If you are not CERTAIN it is the compressor, also check the start relay/overload and capacitor. Same symptom but cheaper, easier fix.

It is possible that it is the thermostat, and if not as you hear the compressor starting shortly then stopping, and redoing that many times.
Your compressor is certainly out of order and must be replaced by a professional, that means to dessolder the current compressor, and replace it with the new one, and change the gas.
So major intervention and at least 2 hours of work.
In the end, you will have a new heart for this great fridge.

How do I install compressor for amana refrigerator. Can a home handy man install a compressor? Do I need freon?

Hi.The compressor motor is connected to the refrigerant system, which is not user serviceable. It will be necessary to have the compressor serviced, or replaced by a qualified technician. During this process, the pressurized system will need to be re pressurized. This will require special tools, and regulative equipment, as well. This can be very dangerous, and that is why I prefer to give proper advise on this type of repair. Kindly, contact your nearest service tech.

Refrigerator will not cool

The first things to check are: (1) make certain the compressor (underneath the refrigerator) is running; (2) make certain the compressor fan (near the compressor toward the rear of the refrigerator) is turning; (3) make certain the refrigerant coils are not dirty; and (4) make certain the evaporator fan (inside the freezer, usually behind an access plate) is turning.

Problems in any of these components will either eliminate cooling completely or make it less efficient.

Jenn air french door refrigerator broken by repair company

yes a 3 in one kit is primarilly used on older fridges that use the old freon(r-12) and sometimes needed a start cap to make them work.the newer fridges use a different freon(r-134a)and require a run cap to make them work.placing a start cap on a compressor that needs a run cap WILL DESTROY THE COMPRESSOR.the factory may or may not cover the repair.i would be on the phone with the company that installed this device and raise cain.i have been in this trade for some time now and am still amazed at the really stupid shortcuts that some companys make
