Before putting the drum in, there is a little tab that you have to move left to right and back, do it a couple times that should solve the problem. if not, its probably a bad drum. look at the drum and see if you see those spots patterns on the drum just for an assurance.

Each page I print has 3 spots on them. I've changed the toner cartridge. What's next? Do I need to replace the drum? Can it be cleaned?

Locate and check the printer drum. You should be able to see the mark that is causing the mark on your page. It could be a scratch or a ring of toner that the wiper is not picking up because a nick or something under it. Try cleaning the drum with a very soft dry cloth and inspect it again. If the mark is still there the drum will have to be replaced. Do Not Try To Clean The Drum With Any Type Of Solvent!

Every page has 3 or 4 black dots right down the center. How do I get rid of these?

Are the spots the same on every page?

Start a print from tray 1/manual feed and just as the trailing edge of paper is entering the machine; quickly open it to stop print and take out the cartridge and look at the drum and the paper underneath. If the issue is there at that point then it would point to the cartridge. If not then it is in the fuser area.

If it is the drum area:

Clean the loose toner up with a dry lint free cloth.

If it is the fuser, it may have a bad spot and would need to be replaced.

A repeating black dot a few cms apart about 5 down an A4 page. Roller or drum need cleaning? how?

Are the spots at 94mm
intervals? (The problem is not solved after printing a few pages.)

1) If toner or glue remains stuck, wipe it off gently with a
cotton swab. (Refer to NOTE in thebottom of this page.)
2) If the photosensitive drum is scratched or deteriorated (exposed), replace the drum

Are the spots at 79mm intervals?..

1) Check and clean the heat roller with a cloth dampened with alcohol.
2) Replace the fixing unit.

Clean the drum unit as follows:
(1) Remove the toner cartridge from the drum unit Place the printing samples in front of the
drum unit, and find the exact position of the image defect.
(2) Turn the drum gear by hand while looking at the surface of the photosensitive drum.
(3) Wipe the surface of the photosensitive drum with a cotton swab until the dust or paper
powder on the surface comes off.
Do not wipe the surface of the photosensitive drum with something sharp. (ball-point pen
Use cleaning liquid which is a 50-50 mixture of ethyl alcohol and pure water.

Brother HL-2040 Printing With Strange Gray Marks on Back of Paper

Sounds to me like the toner - that is the toner cartridge has the wrong toner in it. The drum should be OK - clean it up first and then use a genuine toner cartridge OR you can buy our refill kit on eBay - search for Brother HL2040 - michellem6123

Spots on page

Clean out the toner spillage as best as you can. Your not supposed to use one, but a vacuum is the best method to suck it up. Once clean, replace the image drum (photoconductor unit). Also make sure the laser lens glass panel is clean - wipe it with a soft cloth or tissue.
