The steering colum skips when you turn. Sounds like it is skipping gears and will not turn the wheels.

You unfortunatly have the older style steering assembly and is not an easy fix. My best advice is to take it to a reliable shop to have the steering repaired. It may just need the bushings on the shaft replaced or the gears themselves, depending on the damage.
You can look down at the bottom of the steering shaft and see where the gears are skipping over each other.

Steering skips

Three things need to be checked. The steering shaft for play, the pinion gear on the end of the steering shaft and your stationary gear at the bottom. Raise the hood, turn the wheel back and forth so you can see where the play is coming from.

Steering gear slips

You have the steering shaft the pinion gear on the end of the shaft and the stationary gear at the bottom on the frame. Either the gears are worn out or the steering shaft has too much play in it causing the gears to slip.

Cub cadet lawn mower steering wheel will not turn all the way to the right. It turns all the way to the left, but not the right. Checked the teeth on the fan gear, all are okay. what next?

Even though the teeth on the fan gear are ok, they may have skipped past each other a few teeth. My tractor has a bushing that the end of the steering rod passed through before attaching to the fan gear. The bearing was worn, allowing the steering rod to move, and the fan gear would then to lose it's grip from time to time, eventually making my tractor perform much like yours. See if you can replace that bushing, your issue should be solved.

Steering only turn to left side

You will probably need to place the steering shaft gear and the sector gear and the lower bushing. The original cause of failure is likely the lower bushing where the steering shaft goes through the frame. It probably wore out allowing the shaft to move away from the sector gear allowing the gear teeth to skip on each other.

If I have to turn my steering wheel or move it up and down for it to start whats my problem.

Sounds like a possible short inside the colum, I would check the ignition switch (key switch) if not that check the ignition switch from there check for a short in the steering colum.

1996 ford taurus ignition switch does not work no resistance when turning the key in the on or off position.

It sounds as if the rod or ignition key gear may be broken. The ignition switch is actually on top of the steering colume under the dash. The key turns a gear that is connected to a rod. The rod travels down to the actual electrical ignition switch. If you are not feeling any tension at all when you turn the key, either the rod or gear has broken. In either case the steering wheel all the way down to the key tumblers will need to taken apart. Hope this helps.

My gear shift locked up

Did you leave the steering wheel turn to right or left? If so turn it to the way you left it as far as it will go then try to turn the key. Try this a few times to get it to key to turn. Also try rocking the car while turn the steering wheel and key might need another person. Cause: the park pin is ingaged and with the wheels being turned makes it hard to unlock steering colum.
