The alternator , battery , or starter has burnt out or has a short to earth , wire may be rubbing on chassis some where, trace the wire that you saw smoke from and make sure its not worn through etc , at the least i would say a new alternator and battery is required , without seeing the vehicle its hard to be specific, hope this helps , also will need to check the fuse box's for any blown fuses , make sure you've located that smoking wire

White smoke means water/antifreeze entering the combustion chamber(s) or intake passages. Suspect a gasket leak somewhere (tighten all intake manifold nuts and bolts). Check all radiator and heater hoses for leakage and hose condition.

If it just up and died on the road and will not turn over now even with a jump it almost sounds like you engine may have locked up on you. But it is hard to tell without actually seeing the car. For your sake I do hope it is a different problem. I would like to help you out more. Can you be more specific as to what the car did when it quit on you? Did it make any sounds or anything? Did it quit when you where actually driving or were you sitting some place at an idle? I look forward to hearing from you.

Have you checked your "knock sensor" or cam sensor? It tracks cam and or crank movement for timing.
