The alternator , battery , or starter has burnt out or has a short to earth , wire may be rubbing on chassis some where, trace the wire that you saw smoke from and make sure its not worn through etc , at the least i would say a new alternator and battery is required , without seeing the vehicle its hard to be specific, hope this helps , also will need to check the fuse box's for any blown fuses , make sure you've located that smoking wire

White smoke means water/antifreeze entering the combustion chamber(s) or intake passages. Suspect a gasket leak somewhere (tighten all intake manifold nuts and bolts). Check all radiator and heater hoses for leakage and hose condition.

SOURCE: 93 nissan altima died on the road, won't turn

If it just up and died on the road and will not turn over now even with a jump it almost sounds like you engine may have locked up on you. But it is hard to tell without actually seeing the car. For your sake I do hope it is a different problem. I would like to help you out more. Can you be more specific as to what the car did when it quit on you? Did it make any sounds or anything? Did it quit when you where actually driving or were you sitting some place at an idle? I look forward to hearing from you.

SOURCE: 1998 Altima dies wile driving then wont start back up

Have you checked your "knock sensor" or cam sensor? It tracks cam and or crank movement for timing.

I have a 95 Altima that just dies sparatically while driving it. It spits and sputters and dies. When I go to start it again it turns over but only starts after first sitting 10-15 minuted

Get a quality diagnostic scanner on it to narrow this issue down. Sounds like an ignition module, cps, fuel pump, etc. Seriously, have it scanned for codes!

95 NISSAN ALTIMA TURNS OVER WONT START AIR FILTER SMOKING

Its probably back-firing in the intake - which means it is firing early or the fuel mixture is very lean.
This engine uses a distributor cap and rotor, so I would start there and make sure the cylinders are firing correctly.
If the ignition checks out ok, it could be a problem with the cam timing.

97 altima wont start, engine turns, radio, lights work, no check engine light coming on. Thought it might be spark plugs, put new plugs in, started for 60 sec then died. white smoke comes from engine if i...

Oil is leaking getting into the cylinders which is being burnt which is causing the white smoke from the exhaust. You might have compression problems or worn valves.

Big puff of white smoke at start up after sitting for several hours.

white smoke is water
blue smoke is oil.
nest time try and smell the white smoke see if it smells sweet?
if it does its antifreeze.
and also black smoke is fuel (like a leaky injector )
hope this helps
