RCA H100 MP3 Player

RCA H100A (by 43 users)

posted by slickrickb on Nov 06, 2007

I turn on my MP3 player and it makes a funny noise and doesn't load and then gives me an error message that says "FAT error plz connect UMS device format." I have MAC so I can't mess around with F drives and D drives or anything like that. When it charges it doesn't show up on system.

it goes to the main screen but has nothing under any of it.

When I turn it on, A buzzing noice (accasionally) come on, but it only ever l;oads upto one bar, then it freezes and won't do anything. I even have to let it sit there and die just to shut it off.

I was very scared when I saw that dropping my MP3 Player was the only way to solve the problem of it freezing, but after I tried it a second time it started working. I don't think that RCA would recommend dropping it but hey this it what works.

people... it's not like it's a dis-lodged memory card, these are HDD players, not just flash memory players... you're suggesting dropping HDD's on the floor to fix them??? are you people nuts?!?! think about these things before typing them!!!

I had a different issue than most of you do right now, I had actually dropped mine on a hard surface a few days ago. It ended up powering on but it would get stuck on the first bar, then nothing would have a name on it [after it finally went to the main screen]. I plugged it in and it said "MPT Device" or something along those lines rather than the usual RCA that I used to get. I came online to find a way to fix it, let me just say that dropping it works, or at least it did for me.

Those of you that are saying this only breaks it even more are obviously slamming it way too hard, if you drop it from two feet up there should be no issue with breaking it.

Anyway, here's what I did:

I went into my kitchen and bent over a bit, I lowered my MP3 player so that it was about 2 - 3 feet off of the ground. I proceeded to drop it straight onto it's back and when I picked it up, it was working flawlessly. I honestly didn't think it was going to work, otherwise I would have made a video. I hope this helps you guys!

Today is 4/21/08 and I was searching for solution for my RCA H106A mp3 player problem. It won't play and keep giving FAT error plz connect ums device format. I took it apart and reconnected the 6G hard drive cable but no luck. I called RCA and was chargeed $ 140 for new replacement or throw it away. I tried dropping it 6 times on all sides when it is on with one bar and no luck. I sat on a ******** and no luck. I again read the success in FixYa and tried dropping it 3 times and bingo it started working. It is now playing music as I am happily sharing the fact that dropping sound old fashioned like kicking and slamming but it works. You may want to turn it off wait and them back on and try dropping it on linoleum or wood floor.
Good luck

ok heres what i have so far: FAT error please connect UMS device format. ok well i have basically been getting the same thing as you guys, you know when you get the message and everything comes up with nothing. I tried dropping it, I even tried dropping it from 2 to 10 Foot off the ground, even tried slamming it, im about to use the hammer if i cant fix it. Well basically what i put together is UMS mean USB Mass Storage. and it makes perfect sense that the programming is still in it but no memory. My theory is that maybe the mp3 player has a SD or some kind of memory card that came loose and got knocked out. Thats why when some of you drop it it somehow knocks it back in place. I think the the mounting of the memory card inside has crappy mounting. in other words the memory card comes loose and dropping it on the floor knocks it back in place, although it only works for some of us. I think if we knew how to open it up and just put the card in its spot we would be fine. if anyone agrees with my theory please say so. its the only thing i can think of

I have the same problem as everyone else. FAT ERROR PLZ CONNECT UMS HDD.

This is my third one. RCA has replaced 2 already. I'm out of my warranty period now.

While I save up for an IPOD I'll just keep dropping it - nothing to loose now,
I feel better knowing it's not just me, these are crap.
