Fantom hard drive red light!

Hi,I have a Fantom Titanium 250GB; I was copying large files to the hard drive and midway through the red light came on and a message came up saying a file could not be copied because the drive was corrupt. It was working fine yesterday. I ran scan disk and it is unable to finish and the red light just stays constantly on. Help!

There are no drivers for this unit. It is a plug & play unit that is one of the worst Fantom has ever offered. Very unreliable and many power cord problems.

I tried for several weeks to find the drivers over the net and researched a ton before I called Fantom Tech Support. The number is posted on New Egg under the their Mfg contacts

The problem may be your PC. It may not have an adequate processor/memory to transfer large amounts of data. This can corrupt the files being transferred and you'd get a "write error" or the system will freeze on you.

I would download the HDD's manufacturer software and reformat. If you still have that error after wards...it is most likely your PC doesn't have the capabilities to transfer large amounts of Data. You can either upgrade the memory, add a eSata card... in order to do large data transfers (obviously your external has to have eSata capabilities to use the eSata ports).

    There are 2 formats FAT32 and NTFS. NTFS will be able to transfer larger packets of data. You have to chose between FAT32 or NTFS when you initially format your hard drive. Most externals will come with instructions to give you step by step instructions how to format your drive. Read the instructions weveral times before you you actually try to format the hard drive. Once you have data on the drive, you would need to back it up on another drive if you have to reformat the heard drive. You will lose all your data that is on the drive when you reformat it.

Yes it does make a large difference. I did a search on that drive and there a lot of people who had good luck getting a replacement from the manufacturer. As far as a case is concerned I recently purchased one off of amazon and it was very inexpensive. Just look up "drive enclosure" on amazon.

The disk-drive inside the enclosure is problematic.
Open the enclosure, to get the model-number and serial-number from the label on the disk-drive.
Then, access Fantom's web-site, to check the warranty-status of the drive. If the warranty still is valid, they will replace it, at minimal cost to you.
If the warranty has expired, purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and transplant it into the enclosure, to "resuscitate" your device.

Connect it to a different computer. If it still is not detected, then there is a hardware problem. Exercise the warranty to get it repaired/replaced.

My Fantom II Hard drive only has a red light on

Sounds like the drive has gone faulty, all you can do is take drive out of case, get USB to HDD - USB "Dongle" and hook up HDD, and see if it works on PC & USB, If YES, then Case and interface are faulty, otherwise the HDD is faulty.

Drive not connecting to computer

1. Try connecting it to another computer.

2. Try a different USB cable.

3. Disassemble the unit, to find two parts:
* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter,
* the disk-drive

4. Connect the disk-drive as a "slave" in a desktop computer, and see if the disk-drive is "detected", and if you can retrieve your files.

5. Google-search for a "commercial data recovery service" -- you ship the disk-drive to them, they fix it, just long-enough to copy your files to DVD-writables, and they charge you a _lot_ of money.

Fantom titanium external light turns red on connecting

Hi,

Red is a failure warning but if it only hasppens with the usb plugged in it's mostly likey a failure in the IDE/SATA to USB conversion board.

Take the drive to your local PC shop, ask the techs there to pull the hard drive out of your phantom and test it in a new enclosure. If it works there, buy the enclosure, if it doesn't reply back and let me kow your Country, State and City and I can recommend a pro to look at the actual harddrive if you need files recovered from it.

Hope this helps FixYa

Try the basics first. Unplug and let sit for a while before rebooting the drive. Then if nothing, get a copy of Disk Warrior and you may be able to regain access to the drive in order to save your data.
