Dryer shuts down after 2 to 5 min

I just purchased a used Whirlpool Duet dryer(2 to 3 yrs. old). I hooked it up and placed it on a normal automatic cycle. The unit started up a little noisey but quitened down in approx. one min. Shortly after it broke contact three times and shut down. All programing continued normally although It would not restart when I press the start buttom. When I tried to restart I heard a click in the rear of the dryer. After 15 min or so it restarted by itself an ran approx. 2 min and shutdown the same way again. Do you have any suggestions?

Thanks MBrown

The door is closed completely and the dryer is heating up weather it is excessive I am not sure but it acts like it is overheating by the way it stops. It cuts out several times and then shuts down.

Hi

Please check these common problems...blown house fuse/tripped breaker ( electric dryers need 2 )...loose white/neutral wire...broken belt ( on some models only )...door switch/door switch bracket...*thermal fuse open ( venting needs attention )...broken or burnt wire...timer...motor...burnt power cord/plug...start switch ( especially the ones with a built in relay switch )
* If you find a blown thermal fuse, always clean, change, adjust the venting system and vent hood first, then it is sometimes a good idea to replace the operating thermostat at the same time. This is a picture of -some- modern thermal fuses.

Please do accept the solution and revert for further assistance.

Thanks

Before I can troubleshoot your problem I have two questions:

1) Are you quite sure that the door on the dryer is shutting nice and securely and the latch is securing properly?

2) Does the dryer seem like it is overheating at all or does it seem like a normal temperature to the clothes when removed from the drum?

Whirlpool Duet dryer time skips mins.

clean the stainless steel sensor pads located just inside the dryer door with isopropyl alcohol, these sensors register moisture in the garments and adjust drying times accordingly, when you use dryer fabric softener sheets it coats these sensors and throws the system off, make sure to shut off power to unit as this alcohol is very flammable, then leave door open to air out before re-powering up unit

Dryer is coming on for 3 mins and stops

I have a Whirlpool Duet Electric Dryer that I purchased in Jan 2009. It does the same thing. I have had 4 whirlpool service out ot repair it and none of them could. Now I am being given a hassle from Whirlpool about replacing the unit. I am reporting them to the better business bureau. If your dryer is still under warranty you can try to get them to fix it like I did. But I can't promise that you will get anywhere. I used to think that Whirlpool was the best as well...my mistake. I will never buy another Whirlpool appliance.

How do you clean out the baffles filled with lint in the Whirlpool Duet dryer?

To remove the dryer drum baffles on a Whirlpool Duet, follow these steps:

1. UNPLUG the dryer.

2. Remove the top panel of the appliance by removing the screws that hold the panel in place in the rear of the dryer. With the screws removed, the panel will slide back, then lift off.

3. Locate the bolts that hold the baffles in place on the outside perimeter of the drum. There should be 2 for each one.

4. Remove the screws for the baffle and it will come off.

HELPFUL HINTS:

1. Remove ONE baffle at a time so you can use the remaining baffles to turn the drum manually.

2. Drum rotates in a clockwise direction.

3. When removing or reinstalling each baffle, duct taping it place will keep it from flipping around when you get to the last bolt holding it in place. It will also keep it from dropping in the drum when removing, and help you hold it in place to reinstalling.

If you have any questions, please let me know. I hope this helps you.

try replacing the power cord, and make sure that you have a "dedicated" power sorce for the plug. The system board will shut the dryer down if a power supply issue is detected. This feature is to prevent fire hazards. Make sure your electric box is grounded and up to code.

Time skips from 18 minutes to 6 minutes on automatic mode

It is the moisture sensor system, it is not sensing the wet clothes. Open the door, inside you should see a part with 2 metal bars that is around 3 inches long, clean these bars with a mult purpose cleaner. Sometimes fabric softner sheets and detergent builds up on this so that the machine cannot sense the moisture. Hope this helps.
