Remove the nut that holds the flywheel on.right hand threads.once the nut and starter hub is off the keyway will be visible.you can tell if it is broken then.if it isn't put the hub and nut back on.....problem somewhere else.if it is broken...take a small hammer and tap the flywheel on the oppisit side of the keyway.usually only takes a couple of hits from the hammer.once the flywheel is off the key comes right out of the crank shaft......replace the key, reinstall the flywheel.(some times you have to hold the brake off so the flywheel will slip all the way on shaft) install hub and nut.hope this helped, let me know........................

Toro recycler wont start after hitting rock

flywheel key sheared but before you make this repair... disconnect the spark plug wire, turn the mower on it's side with the muffler pointing down and spin the blade by hand while keying in on one spot to verify the crankshaft isn't bent... removing the spark plug makes this task safer and easier... did you remove the flywheel nut ??? reinstall it so it's even with the top of the crankshaft. put a prybar under the flywheel and hit the nut with a large mallet... DO NOT USE A STEEL HAMMER OR YOU RISK RUINING EVERYTHING... you can actually use a steel hammer but you have to be very careful... that's just a disclaimer :-)

Mower hit a rock and won't start

On most push mowers, there is a "key" that is located on the end of the crankshaft, opposite end of the blade, that drives the flywheel. It's a small rectangle piece of metal that connects the two. When the inertia of the blade stops abruptly, the flywheel acts as a safety for the engine, and shears the key. Tools are made to remove the flywheel and videos online for repair assistance. Replacement keys are specific to the engine you are working on. Hope this helps!

Does the blade need to be on for my 6.5hp self propelled toro mower to start? It keeps backfiring and the blade key is striped.

I am not familiar with this model. However, just about all lawn mower engines rely on the blade to act as a flywheel, a very important factor in engine operation.

I hope this helps you ...

Toro recycler model number SR-21 S lawn mower wont start changed plug, filter, new gas. Mower ran for two lawn cuttings but seemed to overheat and choke out frequintly in high grass now it wont start at...

check your oil is it up to full, then I would check to see if you have compresson, pull your plug and roll over and feel with finger ,but don't touch spark plug wire or you will light up! next I would check for spark, then for fuel, make sure the carb is getting fuel,,,check your hoses and fuel cap and clean your carb and needle/seat and make sure gas will run through the fuel line. Also you could have sheared a flywheel key

the choke out you are talking about could of been a lean condition and smoked the eng rings
Good Luck compresson test should tell all 2StrokeJim

If you are lucky, you have only sheared the flywheel key and messed up the blade. The flywheel key is under the top cover and under the flywheel along an indent in the side of the crankshaft. Those parts would have to be removed to check it....most likely it's sheared (broken) which is what it is supposed to do (most are made of aluminum) when the blade hits an immovable object. It CAN be fixed and there are videos and forum HOW TO's on this subject. A new key is very inexpensive and replacing one is a good learning experience.

Stopped abruptly won't restart

tThe flywheel is indexed to the crankshaft with a soft aluminum "shear" key, when the blade is stopped suddenly the key is broken instead of the crankshaft. The flywheel will need to be removed and a new key installed. Make sure to clean the shaft and flywheel mating surfaces so they fit tightly or the new key won't last too long.

Mower wont start

You will need to replace an aluminum "key" in the flywheel. Whenever you hit something, the key is designed to shear so you don't break something major.
