What might cause a flashing PF code midway through a cycle? Circuit breaker is fine. Any advice greatly appreciated.

Stop trying to restart it! There is obviously a fault so check your manual. If not in there contact Manufacturer or service agent.

My laptop says that one of my disks need to be checked for consistency and then stops on 2 of 3 checks with 62% checked. then reads an unexpected error has occured on one of the disks and freezes. I also...

This is not an easy issue to solve using this method (posting text or email) but I will give it a try!

There are many things that can cause the problem you described. Your memory cards could be loose inside the pc. You can try removing & reseating them to see if this solves the problem. Your partician could be damaged. Your hard drive may need replacement. If your pc came with recovery software, you might try turning on the pc & putting the system recovery disk inside the drive & then restart the pc and try booting from that drive to start the recovery process. If your pc came with recovery software installed on a second drive located in your computer, then you need to follow the instructions on how to access system recovery which are listed in your manual and also flash briefly on the screen when the pc is loading windows (you should see something like press F2 to enter recovery briefly on the left side of the pc when it is first starting up. It only displays this command briefly. Try restarting a few times if you do not see it) . Once in recovery, follow the prompts to start the process to see if the pc can recover and start windows normally.

If you choose cancel disk check, and the screen your describing in your post is a blinking cursor where you can enter commands - try typing "help" and press enter to see if it will give you a list of choices to execute. If it is a command prompt and gives you this list, try scrolling with your arrow keys to find disk check or check disk. Windows has options to repair bad areas of particians, but I am unsure if they would go any farther then the test that is currently running and unable to get passed 62%.

If you have an operating system disk (Windows Xp, Win 7, Win Vista - full versions - not upgrade software) that matches what you are running on your computer you can try restoring or replacing the opearting system to see if that solves your problem. Try putting the disk inside the pc and restart to get it to boot from the disk drive. Then replace your operating system with a new version (warning - this will erase all files that were on the pc) to see if that solves the issue. you can also try installing recovery and/or repair files from the operating system disk. Just put the disk in and restart the pc and read the options that come up - then follow the prompts to repair the system.

Welcome to Fixya

Please see procedure below on how to create recovery disk. Let me know if smae thing will happen.

  • 1

Click the "Start" icon on the Windows Vista home screen. Select "eMachines," then click "eMachines Recovery Management." The eMachines Recovery Management program opens.

  • 2

Click "Create Factory Default Disc." The program will tell you how many discs you will need. Make sure the correct optical drive is selected, then insert a blank disc into that drive. Click "Start" to begin the burning process.

  • 3

Remove the disc when it is finished burning and label it "Recovery CD 1." Insert the next the next blank disc if one is required. Click "OK" to begin burning the next disc. Repeat this step until all of the discs have been created and labeled. Close the eMachines Recovery Management program, insert the system CD that came with the laptop and restart the laptop.

  • 4

Press "F12" repeatedly when the eMachines logo is displayed on the screen to be redirected to the Boot menu. Select the optical drive, then press "Enter."

  • 5

Insert Recovery CD 1 when you are prompted to insert the recovery disc. The eMachines Recovery Management program will open.

  • 6

Click the "Restore" tab in the list on the left side of the eMachines Recovery Management program window, then select "Completely Restore System to Factory Defaults." The computer automatically restarts and the recovery process begins. Insert any additional recovery discs as requested. The computer will reboot automatically when the laptop has been recovered to its original factory default settings, and you will be taken to the Windows Setup screen.

Set up Windows Vista with your own personal settings.

If the issue still exists, I request you to perform the full system recovery using the recovery disks. To perform this full system recovery, you can use the recovery disks that you have created using the recovery partition.
Use the recovery discs to restore the PC by following the steps below:
    1. Insert the recovery disc in the optical disc drive and start the computer.
If the computer is running, insert the recovery disc and immediately click Start and select Restart to force the computer to start from the recovery disc.
    2. When prompted, Press any key to boot from CD or DVD, press any key on the keyboard.
    3. Allow the recovery disc to start and load the required files while the Microsoft loading screen is displayed. It may take several minutes to load the required files.
    4. When the HP Recovery Manager window displays, click Advanced options , System recovery , and then click Next to open the Recovery Manager.
    5. Follow the on-screen instructions and perform the required actions.
NOTE: Do not interrupt the recovery process even though the computer may restart and the Windows desktop may display at various times.
    · When prompted, follow the on-screen instructions to Backup the user files.
After performing the backup, when prompted, re-insert the recovery disc, and then click Next to continue the recovery process.
    · A status box is displayed to indicate the status of the recovery and the estimated time remaining.
    · If you used multiple discs when you created the personalized recovery discs, follow the prompts to remove the first disc and insert any requested discs.
    6. When prompted to Insert the Supplemental driver disc , take one of the following actions:
    · If you purchased a replacement recovery disc from HP, and it included a Supplemental driver disc, insert the disc and click OK or Next . The recovery program checks the supplemental disc and installs the specific needed files.
After the Supplemental files are installed, a prompt is displayed to remove the Supplemental disc and insert the original recovery disc.
    · If you purchased a replacement recovery disc from HP, and it did not include a Supplemental driver disc, click Skip or Cancel . The recovery program will ignore the request and install the next file on the recovery disc.
    · If you created a personal recovery disc, press Next to continue.
    7. Continue following the on-screen instructions to complete the recovery process.
NOTE: If you have not created a personal recovery disc, or the recovery disc fails or become corrupted, see HP Notebook PCs - Order Recovery Discs for Vista as your notebook is preinstalled with Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1.
