I'm afraid the magnetron (most expensive part - generates the microwaves) is on its way out. In most cases, it doesn't pay to repair it - unless the replacement would cost over $200 and/or hard to find the right size for built-in. I would vote for replace with new - you've had a good run for the money, but this might not be the only problem that develops soon. my kenmore elite microwave is loosing power - wutxtye0rjd9d9ekmodqt1eoxkvn9hr9qjz1l3dabggyud7sdgr36czsrfxqenadhnijx9nfayi+sz1sug0aaaaasuvork5cyii=

Have a 4 1/2 year old Kenmore Elite Untra Wave Microwave Hood Combination. Recently got an F-9 error code after about 10 seconds. Tried unplugging for over an hour and then plugging back in, but got the...

The F9 error code indicates a failed inverter. If resetting the unit does not help you will need to have the inverter & harness checked.

This can sometimes by caused by a power surge or glitch through the electrical lines.
You can sometimes clear this fault by completely unplugging the microwave for 1 minute.
Plug it back in and see if the fault code returns.
If it does, then you have an internal component failure that will need to be serviced by a technician.
Microwaves must be serviced by technicians due to the inherent dangers involved in repairing these appliances.
Internal capacitors can retain a lethal electrical charge even though the unit is completely unplugged.
A microwave radiation leakage test must be performed on the unit following any internal component repair.

It does not ALWAYS indicate a inverter control board problem however in other brands/models.
LG's service manual (for an example) suggests the f-9 code could be due to line voltage, magnetron, inverter module, "Relay2", or a loose connection between door/magnetron/control pcb.
Other indications might help narrow down these choices before having to pull out your multimeter and crack open the microwave case.
For example, if the microwave works, but heats slowly, then the troubleshooting manual narrows your choices down to magnetron or line voltage problems, and pretty much rules out the other possibilities.

Kenmore Microwave Oven Sudden Power Reduction

I would be sure to check the microwave's outlet under a load.

One good way is to use a toaster or hair dryer for about a minute to see if they run at full power and run without their heating elements dimming.

If the power at the outlet is steady, I would suggest a hard reset. Unplug the unit for a minute or so. Then plug it back in, set the clock and try again.

If it still fails to heat properly, I would say you have a failing magnetron, and it would just be a coincidence that the failure began after the new wiring was installed.

If you need to order the magnetron, Sears sells it for $73.13, but you can get it for $41.84 here.

Same thing happened to us. We just came back from Sears, where we bought another. Just for giggles, my wife suggested unplugging the old one and plugging it back in again. It works now. New one's going back to the store.

Kenmore Elite taking long time to heat items

This is most likely a failing magnetron.

If it's less than 5 years old, Sears/Kenmore should cover the part, but you would still have to pay for a service call.

If you or someone you know decide to work on it, we have *critical* safety, disassembly, and troubleshooting info at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk
