have the printer preferences been changed accidentally to print in greyscale? Is the cartridge installed correctly? Now and again if the cartridges are opened and not installed straight away the ink dries up in the nossel and clogs the printer head, easily rectified with some cleaning solution. Cartridges also go out of date. hope this helped

Here was the solution. You MUST use HP brand black cartridge. Originally I purchased a #94 Office Max brand black cartridge. After it did not work I took it back and they gave me a second Office Max brand and that did not work either. So I took it back and they sold me an HP brand (I only needed to pay the difference in price so Office Max was good to work with). I installed the HP #94 black cartridge and everything now works.

Here's a link to the HP online support solution for this problem. And this may pertain.
Make sure you have the correct settings in Print Preferences. And perhaps use the online manual available here to check other options related to the ink cartridges and printing problems....
But I have to admit I know of no way to keep the color cartridge from printing, nor from having to buy another cartridge (short of refilling it). I am intrigued by the notion that you can possibly get a grey photo cartridge instead of the tri-color cartridge to print black and white photos and richer blacks...but have never tried this, and don't know for sure if it's an option for your model....
I hope this information allows you to resolve this issue. If you need further assistance, please post back with a comment to this thread.
