Probably a better way to say it would be parallel or perpendicular. Parallel is open, perpendicular is closed.

This is the link to the owners manual above.
Below is the link to the installation and service manual.

http://www.hayward-pool.com/pdf/manuals/Manual225.pdf

Gas vents that are spaced less than 8 ft horizontally from a vertical wall or similar obstruction shall terminate not less than 2 ft above any portion of a building within 10 ft.

I would think that the inspector would interpret this part of the manual as calling for a venting kit to be installed and run two feet at least above and part of the building within 10 feet horizontally.

So if the deck is attatched to the house, you will need this to be vented. If the deck is seperate, you might be able to get away with leaving it as is.

Spa check valve

Your pool and spa share a filter and/or a heater? Not the best arrangement ... but it is the arrangement you have. Evidenetly, you do have a check valve that is not checking. Are you sure that is where the water is going and not out the waste?

If you replace the check valve - be sure you know which way the water is flowing. Check with your pool supply to see if this valve can be used in the vertical position.

Is it normal to run a 16" vertical tie in to a horizontal exit

No, Exhaust vents on heaters should always maintain vertical orientation because heat rises and creates a natural drafting drawing the fumes out. You have a monoxide poisoning situation otherwise.

Just wanted to determine, for a Kawasaki bayou 220, the fuel lever positions for fuel Off VS On (ON = vertical?).

The valve is open when the lever and valve are parallel. Generally that is down. When the lever is pointing across the valve it is closed. Think T vs. I. If the lever and valve cross it's closed, if they go the same way it's open.

That applies to a two position valve, if your Bayou has a reserve postion it could be different. That would be three positions and across one way would be open, down would be reserve, and across the other way would be closed. Should be marked on the petcock if that is the case.
