Look just above the brake pads where the cable enters the brake mechanism. There should be an adjustment screw with a retainer nut. Back the nut off to loosen and then turn the adjuster screw clockwise to allow the cable to slacken a bit. this should open the brake caliper and give you a bit more clearance...

How do I stop brakes shuddering


If you are referring to the Brake Pulsating or Steering Wheel shaking when applying the brakes - that is more than likely warped rotors. Which may be that you are due for brake system maintenance/repair.
Usually that happens about when the pads are worn out. It will need the rotors turned or replaced and probably brake pads replaced also. With Disc Brakes front and rear you may be able to view the thickness of the lining on the pads through the openings on the wheels - depending on which wheels you have
NOTE: The cost of new rotors may be very close to the cost of turning your old ones - check this possibility - if so - buy new :)

Replace brake pads


tools needed adjustable wrench, 10mm wrench or 6mm allen wrench. Loosen the fastener on the back of the brake pad. remove it then replace with a new one. Making sure that as you tighten the fastener back you are holding the working surface of the brake pad on the side of the wheel. Pay close attention that the brake pad doesn't touch the tire when the lever is pulled.

did both rear wheels get hot? if only one then perhaps the wheel cylinder is seized if both then maybe the pads are 2 thick or the master cyinder is seizing

I have avid juicy disk brakes. I took the rear wheel off and the pads but now I can't put the wheel back on because the pads are too close together so that the disk won't fit. Can you help please


You need to put a screwdriver between the pads and lever them apart. Trouble is, this will push the fluid back up to the reservoir near the brake lever. make sure there is room for the level to rise and make sure you don't get brake fluid on any painted surface as it will bring the paint off if left.

Is the car 4 wheel disc brakes, or just disc brakes in front? Either way, the procedure is the same. Do one wheel at a time. Take the wheel off, then take the brake caliper off. There should be only 2 bolt holding it on. Pull the brake pads out of the caliper. Then take a c clamp and compress the piston on the back side of the caliper. Then put the new pads in and slip the whole thing over the rotor and put the bolts back in. Do this for all the other wheels, then BLEED THE BRAKES. This is the most important step. You need to get someone to help you with this. Have them pump the brakes up until they get stiff. With their foot still on the brake, loosen the relief screw until clean fluid comes out with no air bubbles or pockets. Then immediately close the screw back down. Do this for each wheel. The relief screw is just a small screw on the caliper, just look around for it, you'll find it.

Anti lock brake light is on


Hello,
Here are 3 common causes for the ABS light to be on.
1. Low brake fluid. ( make sure the brake fluid isn't low.)
2. A faulty wheel speed sensor. ( you should have the four wheels checked. )
3. Your pads need to be replaced. ( once the pads are worn down to a certain level, it will cause the ABS light to come on.

I changed the front brake pads and now have no pressure when i press the brake peddal. the master cylinder is full but still no pressure. what did i do wrong?


You may not have done anything wrong. You won't have any pressure the first couple of times that you press the brake pedal. Try pumping the brakes a few times. When you change the pads you have to open the caliper all the way up to get the caliper back on. When you press the brake the pads won't go all the way to the caliper on the first couple of times you press the brake. But once you pump the pedal, it should build up pressure. If not you will have to bleed the brakes.

Will I need a caliper reset tool kit to change the brakes on my 2007 toyota sienna or will a standard c-clamp do the job? And since it is an ABS system, I assume that brakes must be bled, correct?


Brake Pads Removal & Installation Front To Remove:
  1. Remove the front wheels. Front brake caliper (exploded view) toyota-09-00-5838.gif

  2. Loosen the caliper bleeder.
  3. Hold the slide pin; remove the 2 mounting bolts and remove the brake caliper from the support.
  4. Support the caliper.
  5. Open the brake bleeder. Press the caliper piston into the bore.
  6. Close the bleeder after the piston has reached the bottom of the caliper bore.
  7. Remove the brake pads, support plates, wear indicators and anti squeal shims.
  8. Remove the slide pins and bushings from the caliper support.
To Install:
  1. Lubricate the slide pins and bushings with brake grease.
  2. Install the bushing on the slide pin.
  3. Install the slide pin on the caliper support.
  4. Install the brake pad support plates on the caliper supports.
  5. Lubricate the anti squeal shims with brake grease.
  6. Install the anti squeal shims on the brake pads.
  7. Install the pad wear indicator facing upward and install the pads on the caliper support.
  8. Install the caliper on the support.
  9. Install the 2 mounting bolts, hold the slide pins and tighten 25 ft-lb (34 Nm).
  10. Fill the reservoir and bleed the brakes.
  11. Install the front wheels.
Rear To Remove:
  1. Remove the rear wheels.
  2. Loosen the caliper bleeder. Rear brake caliper (exploded view) toyota-09-00-5842.gif

  3. Hold the slide pin; remove the 2 mounting bolts and rear brake caliper assembly from the support.
  4. Support the caliper.
  5. Open the brake bleeder. Press the caliper piston into the bore.
  6. Close the bleeder after the piston has reached the bottom of the caliper bore.
  7. Remove the brake pads, support plates, and anti squeal shims.
  8. Remove the slide pins from the caliper support.
To Install:
  1. Lubricate the slide pins with brake grease.
  2. Install the slide pin on the caliper support.

  4. Lubricate the anti squeal shims with brake grease.
  5. Install the anti squeal shims on the brake pads.
  6. Install the rear pads on the caliper support.

  9. Fill the reservoir and bleed the brakes.
  10. Install the front wheels.

How do you replace the rear brake pads on a 1994 corvette? is there a special tool you need to remove the e-brake cable?


On my 90 it was this easy.

Raise car
Remove wheels
Open bleeder and spread pads
Close bleeder
Remove the two bolts holding the calipers on
Replace pads
Install calipers
Replace wheels and lower car.
