Why does My GE freezer thaws out about twice a year

The freezer section of a refrigerator should go through a defrost cycle 2 or 3 times a day. If it doesn't, the coil will ice up and fail to produce cold air, causing the freezer to warm up.

If your unit is older, try replacing the defrost timer. If it's a newer model, then, unfortunately, it's likely a bad motherboard (made in China) which can only be replaced in its entirety (not repaired).

The freezer wont freeze and the back panel is covered in frost

Hi and welcome to FixYa. I am Kelly. Your refrigerator is not defrosting automatically. This can be caused by:
1. Defrost time control
2. Open defrost heating element
3. Evaporator fan motor either not running or running to slow.
4. Wiring

Since you did not include a model number and due to the various defrost controls I can not help you. I really need your make and model number to point you in the right direction or to provide you a source for replacement parts.

In the mean time you can get a 2 - 4 day reprieve by doing a manual defrost. You do a manual defrost by performing the following steps:

1. Unplug the unit
2. Remove freezer contents
3. Place a fan blowing air into the freezer compartment for a little over 2 hours. (Makes a mess... rags and Mop time)
4. After 2 hours wipe out any residual water...
5, Plug in unit
6. Reload freezer.
7. Check temps in 4 - 5 hours.

All this will do is de-ice the evaporator coils. (I.e what the auto-defrosting function is supposed to do.) The automatic defrost circuit will most likely have to be troubleshot to return the unit to normal service.

Thanks for choosing FixYa,

Kelly

Whirlpool side by side made in 1998 is not cold. freezer side temp ranges between 32 - 40 degrees at coldest setting. coils are clean. blower is working. could thermostat be stuck or freon low? where do...

Most of the time there is an automatic defrosting problem when the freezer starts warming up. Ice builds up on the evporator coils.. airflow gets restricted and the temps warm up. Check to see that your evaporator fan is running at full speed. If it is then do a manual defrost by performing the following steps:

1. Unplug the unit
2. Remove freezer contents
3. Place a fan blowing air into the freezer compartment for a little over 2 hours. (Makes a mess... rags and Mop time)
4. After 2 hours wipe out any residual water...
5, Plug in unit
6. Reload freezer.
7. Check temps in 4 - 5 hours.

If temps are normal you have an Automatic defrost problem.
Causes can be:
1. Defrost timer / control
2. Defrost Heating Element
3. Wiring

There are other causes but timer / control or the element in a 10 + year old unit are the normal failures.

Do this step before the manual defrost
Make sure that the condensor fan in the lower rear part of the unit is running at FULL speed.and that the condensor coils are free of lint and debris. If the condensor and fan are loaded with lint it will cause warmer operating temps. Clean as needed.

If after you do a manual defrost and the temps come back to normal for at least 24 hours you will need to troubleshoot the auto-defrost circuit. If you need help at that time just respond here and I will help you.

Thanks for Choosing FixYa

Not blowing cold air

unplugged the unit, kept the doors closed about 10 to 12 hours plugged back in and in about 2 hours started blowing cold air into freezer another 4 hours was blowing cold air into refrigerator and continuily got back to the themostat settings, about 1 day. no food was lost because the doors were closed still keeping it cold. i think the fan in the freezer was frozen with ice,but could access it, not the main fan in the back the unit by the compressor, that was running fine. so basically i defrosted the freezer fan by unplugging it. this is the 2nd time in 4 years ive done this, well it beats spending 1000-1500 dollars to replace it TRY IT I HOPE IT WORKS FOR YOU BEFORE YOU CALL FOR SERVICE,dave

Ice Maker does not make ice.

Your water feed to the unit is controled by a needle valve and could be filling up with calcium, to fix this you can take the unit apart and soak valve in a solution that will break down the calcium. Often it is easer to replace the unit or the valve, most things you use to decalcify the valve can also damage it at the same time.

Refrigerator and freezer not cooling/freeding

Possibly a defrost circuit problem -

1) Bad defrost thermostat
2) Bad defrost heater
3) Bad defrost timer
4) Failed evaporator fan motor.

Look for frost accumulated inside the louvers at the back panel, top and bottom. If you see it, remove food from freezer and put in ice chest. Take out shelves, get hair dryer and warm the backside of the freezer, directing air down the louvers. Then leave to sit for 4-6 hours with the freezer door open. Put towels in the bottom of the freezer to catch any melted ice.
After period of time, plug unit back in and power the unit back up. Once you know it's cooling, empty ice chests back into freezer.

If there is a problem in any of the above components, then it will show up in 3-4 weeks witht he same problem again.

AC,DC, gas RV fridge Dometic

You more than likely need to replace the control cable between the upper and lower board. It comes as a kit with the upper board. You can also do a bypass test by unplugging your thermoster from the circuit board. The thermoster is the temperature control for the refrigerator nothing to do with the freezer.
