Cobra 29 LTD doesn't have SSB. You must have a Cobra 146 GTL or one of the Cobra 148 GTL's.

SOURCE: it has a great dead

  • Hi, I can help.

  • If you have confirmed your dead key being "great" the the two things that can be causing your problem is a faulty mic, mic wiring, mic connector (either on the CB i=or the mic connector itself.
  • Have you tried a different mic?

  • The other thing would be a bad antenna, antenna connection, SWR.
  • Have you tried a different antenna? Checked your SWR (with an inline meter)? Make sure the antenna connector (PL259) and the connector for the antenna on your CB (SO239) are in good condition and that there are no cold soldier joints.

  • If you have any comments please feel free to leave them here.
  • Hope this helps and thanks for using FixYa.

Regards, Tony

Just want to know if i should use my ll203 amp in am or ssb mode when running with a cobra CB radio?

What radio?? Does it have single side band(SSB)? If not, then don't use SSB.

AM - amplitude modulation
SSB - single side band.

If you have SSB, there would be a switch on it to transmit in SSB. If not, it is AM only.

Second, Has this radio been worked on to be able to run on an amp? If not, you will blow the amp.

A CB radio transmits dead keys with 4 watts of power, and transmits with 4 watts of audio.

a 4 watt dead key is too much for a linear amp. You will smoke the transistors. Also, 4 watts of audio is not enough to drive it properly. You won't get full power.

The dead key needs to be around 2 to 2 -1/2 watts,or what ever makes the linear dead key half its peak wattage., and the modulation (audio) turned up all the way.

It doesn't sound like you know too much about CB radio's. Not a big deal, you can learn. For right now you may want to take it to a cb shop and tell them you want a peak and tune, and set up to run a linear.

You can find CB shops usually at truck stops. Some area's they are other places. Check the internet for local shops.

Galaxy 2527 all works except no dead key wattage.

if you are talking on SSB then their is never a dead key wattage.
SSB uses all modulation, no dead key.

Cobra 148 gtl

First off check to see if your mic gain is turned all the way down. Second; if you have a power mic is the battery dead ir the volume of the mic turned down. If these check ok, look for a loose or broken audio wire in your microphone, and the connector (both ends can break). I have seen the wires break as far back as 4 inches from the mic head and the connector depending on how the user held the microphone, or pulled against the wire. if the problem is not found to be any of the above I suggest you take the radio to a qualified technician for repair.
