Sounds like the magnetron has failed. This is the component that produces the microwave that heats the food. The cost of the magnetron is about 95% of the cost of a microwave . Most people don't, for this reason, replace the magnetron, they replace the whole oven which is probably what you will end up doing. There is a possibility that the circuit that provides power to the magnetron is faulty and you need to take it apart, find the proper electrical leads and test them with a volt meter. To do this you have to remove it from its mounting and take it apart. It is a fairly lengthy process however.

Magnetron

If the microwave is loud or noisy only when cooking, the magnetron tube might be defective. The magnetron uses high voltage, high current DC power to generate the microwave frequency that cooks the food. Under normal circumstances the magnetron is nearly silent. However if it is damaged or nearly burned out it can begin emitting high pitched or growling noises. It's not normally dangerous to use a microwave oven when it makes these noises, but they are an indication that the magnetron is almost dead and will need to be replaced.

Stirrer Motor

If the microwave is loud or noisy the stirrer motor might be worn out. The stirrer is a metal blade which slowly turns around, deflecting the microwave energy in a random pattern inside the microwave oven. As the motor nears the end of its useful life it begins to make grinding noises. The microwave will not heat food evenly without this stirrer, the motor should be replaced.

No matter what time i put in it cuts off in 60 seconds on a sharp

This sounds like a bad damper switch or motor. Double check the shut off time....... see if it's actually 59 seconds..
When you unplug the unit from the wall for 2 minutes then plug it bad in, you should be able to faintly hear a motor run for a few seconds. This is the damper motor running. This will verify that the motor is operating.....
Also, check the thermistor.

Ge spacesaver microwave ...it is 5 years old and stopped heating

I have an over the oven microwave that blew a magnetron after 4 years. Could be the same thing. It was out of warranty for the free labor, so I took it apart (I'm kind of a geek) and found out the magnetron was gone. Shortening the story: I bought a new magnetron from an online place and replaced it and it works fine. If you have someone replace your magnetron, see if you can get it for free-they have a long warranty on the magnetron ($150 part) and at 5 years, you probably qualify. Rich

Ticking sound when running microwave

It may be a noise coming from the turntable motor or stirrer motor, if so equipped.

If it's not too loud, I wouldn't worry about it unless it gets louder or you get further symptoms.

Microwave Turn Table

This could be a failing turntable motor, but more likely your turntable support has gotten bent. That's an easier and cheaper problem to solve. Excessive heat can sometimes make the legs of the support bend so that the center is raised up far enough that it won't always make good contact with the motor. You can test this by running the microwave empty for a few seconds. It may hesitate to turn or stutter. Next try it with a bowl with several cups of water in it. The extra weight may push it down so it makes good contact and runs without a hitch. The way I fix these is to use a stove burner or a torch to heat up the legs and bend them up a bit. Then I quickly set up or clamp the support so it's held in the proper position for a few minutes until it cools. One way to hold the heated support in position is to place an object under the end of each leg and put something slightly heavy on top of it in the middle. If you need a new motor or just want to see helpful exploded views of your model, see the GE or Sears parts Web site: http://www.geappliances.com/shop/prts/ http://www3.sears.com/
