Not much info given but I think I am with you. Thumping attemps to turn over, does that meaning, "trying but won't spin over"?. Thump sounds like the starter bendix engages (thump) to a motor that is maybe stuck in position, or from a starter that is stuck in position. If battery checks good then a solid hit says, not enough power to turn, meaning, loose cable or connection, weak starter, stuck starter (from age, rust, or sitting in weather), or stuck engine. If you bang on the starter a few times with a hammer, does it change its actions when you turn the key? Make sure the blade is disengaged to start, this will put extra drag on the starter and battery, most won't activate start cycle while the blade is on or in gear. I would check all connections to and from battery and starter, I would tap starter a few times with a hammer and compare. If it acts different afterwards, I would remove the starter, then clean it up and oil it, grease the bushings, then test it with jumper cables to verify it spins fast, strong, and free, without binding or sticking, if good, I would put it back on and try it. It does sound to me like the starter or the engine is stuck. The connections are critically important as to how many actual cranking amps of intensity it can feed to the starter. Loose connections can still carry and send the 12v (actually 13.8) to it but, the cranking "amps" are the intensity or strength of that power to start it.

Why does my battery loosing its charge ? I charge it but it keeps running down ? I have checked every thing that I think could be a problem

How old is your battery?
Is your battery being charged when the engine is running?
Have access to a 12 volt dc voltmeter?
Put across pos. and neg. side of battery while engine is running should read ABOVE 12 volts dc?
then check voltage when engine is off and compare?
if you have a higher reading when the engines is running than when engine is off then your charging system is charging, Then battery is suspect.
if it is not charging or no difference in voltage when engine is running or isnt running then look into the engines charging system IE: charging diode, good and clean ground wire connections, etc: without knowing more detail this is a basic check.
Note :Run your engine at higher than idle when doing these checks

Briggs and stratton engine model #31H777,type0297 E1,code041014ZA-motor turns over but won't start-getting fire at the plug also plug is wet with gas.

there are the basic things for an engine to start. air, fuel, and spark. if you are getting spark at the plug one down. try taking your air cleaner off and spray starting fluid into carb with choke open then close. if it starts and runs a litlle then dies then you have a fuel problem. take carb off and clean real good take bowl off and clean with carb cleaner. that should solve you problem if not let me know

Knocking sound from an '02 Briggs & Stratton engine.

Your engine is about to blow. That knocking sound is indicative of a connecting rod bearing out of tolerance. This condition never gets better; it'll finish out by breaking the endcap on the rod, and usually puts a hole in the block. Sometimes, it can be caused by a bolt coming loose from the endcap, and I've had success by taking it apart and tightening the bolt, fixing the problem for at least several years. This can only be done if there isn't any deformation from it knocking.
