Top of words are cut off

Printer works good and creates a great document except for a couple of words that the top of the letters are cut off. Any suggestions as to what could cause this and how to resolve.

The words that are cut off are in the middle of the document not around the margins.

Often times, some documents might have their margins or header/footers set to high for the printer to handle. Try opening the document and checking the margins, one inch all around is usually the default margin settings.

With document open, click CTRL+A to select all. CTRL+C to cut, and then in the application form CTRL+V to paste into the box. These commands are just about universal for all Windows based applications btw.

The default paper selection/ size in MS Word is 'letter'. you may have designed the document on letter size and while printing you have A4 size paper in the printer.
So, Make sure that you design the document on the same paper size (such as A4, which is commonly used). Secondly, while printing don't print the document directly. From the Print dialogue option choose the exact paper size and un-check (de-select) any option of paper resizing (if available). You will have the documents printed exactly as designed.

Let me know if any further clarification/ assistance is required.

Hope it helps! Good Luck! Thanks for using Fixya!

This is usually a printer cartridge or printer head issue. Usually you can clean with rubbing alcohol and a swab. Canon printers usually need new print jets.

I have a Dell 3130cn, just bought a new CPU with Windows 7, running Word 2007. Only getting a 1.5" strip of the picture on one end of 8.5x11 paper. Downloaded 64 bit driver (I believe) but not...

Lets see if we can't figure out what could be causing your printer to print a small strip like that.

First thing to check are the current settings on your printer to see what size of document it is printing. The best way to check settings are from inside a microsoft word document. So open or create a word document and then click on file (or the round globe at the top left of the screen) and slide down to "print" and click on it.

When the printer screen opens, click on "properties" next to the name of your printer. This will open the area that controls the type of document, size and quality ect which are your current settings. Click on "paper quality" tab at the top left of the screen and check the size and type of document that is set. make sure that all settings are for letter size 8 1/2" x 11".

Next click on effects and make sure that it is set to print on letter sized documents (same as above).

If all settings are correct, then open a word document and click on file (or the round globe at the top left) and then slide down to print - but don't click on it - instead slide over to print preview to open up a preview of the current settings.

Tell me - do you see the full document in the print preview? If the document looks the way that it should then we can be sure that its not the settings causing the problem.

Next thing to do is disconnect the usb cord from the pc, and then open your control panel and go to printers and delete the current printer.

Go to Dell's website ( and click on drivers and software and enter the name and model of your printer and download the whole software package that includes the drivers and everything.

that should solve your issue

A940 printing issue sounds more like a software issue, than a hardware issue. Can you check on all version updates for the software from MSoft, and ensure that the drivers for your printer, by application, are up to date. From what I'm seeing, this MAY not be a printer issue.

and, if you want, we do this sort of service call remotely. see my link here for more on that.

There's a profile link on top right, that may be of some value, if this becomes unsolvable from your end.

Print problems

Its probally the way your configuring the way the print file is printing (IE: portrait or landscape) portrait is the top side being 8.5" or landscape being 11" wide on top! First make sure your printer has both landscape and portrait formats loaded into your printer. This will help the you by when you go to print you can try both trays to print to. If this is not your problem then its the way driver is configured and possibly try printing to a pdf file. If you cannot create a PDF from the application try finding some trial software that will enable you to create PDF files. If you can create a good PDF file and can then print that file to your printer you will have better results, because the software your using might not be configured to work with this printer. PDF files will work great and you can see the preview before you print. If you have more info like what exact software you are using and what platform(PC or mac) and repost this question i will get the update and i can answer this question better.
