Question about Refrigerators

Open Question

Amana ARB1917 series fridge: defrost heaters - where? Rubberized?

I'm 90% sure the problem with my bottom-freezer fridge is the defrost thermostat or the defrost heater (part 67002135). I've swapped out the defrost thermostat and turned the thing back on to see what happens (it's a gradual frosting problem that takes about a week to ''kick in''). In case it's not, I'd like to know where to find and how to replace the defrost heaters. This baffles me. I can find one on an exploded diagram at an online parts store, (http://www.reliableparts.ca/models/76464/95042 - part 15 - exploded diagram here: http://www.reliableparts.ca/models/76464/95042) but when I look in the corresponding spot in my Amana ARB1917CB, there seem to be two identical parts on either side of the evaporator unit, both coated in some sort of thick black rubber that makes them impossible to see, much less remove and test. This coating covers not only the ''heater'' (if this is the heater) but also up and down the wires until they terminate either in the freeze wall or under the evaporator unit.

Where are the defrost heaters in an Amana ARB1917CB? Are they usually coated in a black rubbery substance? If so, how do you remove them and check/replace them -- does the black rubbery stuff need to be replaced as well?

SOURCE: evaporator fan jams with ice buildup from drain

Could be that, or it could be the temperature sensor on the evaporator - if that goes, then as soon as the freezer starts a defrost cycle, it will think it's got the evaporator hot enough and will start cooling again.

Suggest you let the freezer thaw out then, with a voltmeter connected across the terminals on the board which connect to the sensor, turn the freezer on and see if the sensor reacts sensibly to the evaporator cooling down. It's usually done with a thermistor, but just for the moment, I can't remember whether it's usually a PTC or an NTC.

That way, if it is the sensor, you'll be spared the expense of replacing a serviceable pcb.

SOURCE: Bottom freezer works; Top fridge too warm

The defrost timer is about 6 inches square and about 2 inches thick. It could be located under the box, in front or back. Some models of Whirlpool and Kenmore locate it behind the cover over the light inside the box. Westinghouse is often inside the cooler compartment, in the top. Some Gibson boxes put it in the back, about chest high. It's often hidden, but every self-defrosting refrigerator has one, except for a few models of Whirlpool and Kenmore with factory-installed ice makers — these models have an icemaker which also has the defrost timer built into it. The timer will have a stem that protrudes, or may be flush, which you can turn using a large blade screwdriver. Mark the position with a pencil, then turn it until it "clicks." This should start the defrost mode. The defrost mode will continue for 10 to 30 minutes, depending on the design. If after 20 minutes, the refrigerator has not restarted, or the timer stem has not moved, the timer is bad. When replacing the timer, you must use the correct one. There are about a dozen different configurations with even more types of connections. I suggest you order the part by make, model number, and serial number of your refrigerator to make sure you get the right one. Depending on your brand, and where you purchase the part, the price may be from $20 to $40 for this part.

You can test the termostat, just see if the fridge goes on and off..
If it goes off then the defrost heater sould go on.
The best way is to replace both the timer and thermostat...

if a evaporator gives any problems then the fridge wont cool down.

Hope this helps..

Regards.

Wouter.

SOURCE: self defrosting fridge/freezer

Good day,
That is normal if the room or area is too cold. If the room temperature drops below 55 degrees Fahrenheit then that problem will start to show up.
All manufacturers state the machine will start to unbalance below that temperature.

The freezer is working but the fridge is not. We unplugged and defrosted it for 24 hr and it was fine for 1 week and now it's doing it again.

Assuming that the fan in the freezer is working, then your auto defrost system has failed- either the timer or the defrost heater assembly(heater and defrost thermostat)

Look for frost on the rear of the freezer, that is a sign of a defrost problem. If the heater or heater thermostat is open then ice will form over the cols and block the flow of air.

Defrost cycling problem which will affect cooling the fridge compartment by struck the freezer fan's function. To solve defrost problem:
First, locate the defrost timer which may hidden behindcorners of the fridge at the back bottom, in some models located in the ceilingof the fresh food section or behind the cold control cover. Once you locate thedefrost timer, slowly turn the screw in the middle of the defrost timer withstraight screwdriver until the fridge shuts off. Now it's in defrost. If thedefrost heater(s) starts, replace the defrost timer and defrost thermostat. Ifthe heater(s) does not start, unplug wire cord to check ohm test for continuityof heater. If continuity is there, plug cord wire which gives power 120volts(check specification) to heater. If heater no starts, bypass defrost thermostatby join the 2 wires in the defrost thermostat. If the heater now comes on,replace the defrost timer and defrost thermostat. If the heater itself is bad, replace it. Thanks and hope helpful.

Freezer is cold, but cold air is not circulating in refrigerator

Check freezer fan is working. If ice formed over freezer fan by working. It's a common problem due to irregular defrosting. Keep freezer setting temp at 5 degree. And check defrost timer, thermostat, heater are working properly.
Turn timer with small tip screw driver to shut off fridge. If not shut off, replace timer. Turn counter clockwise defrost thermostat. If fridge not shuts off replace defrost thermostat.Check heater by join the 2 wires in the defrost thermostat. And after 1 minute, unplug power and keep your arm on heater. If it's warm heater is o.k. Otherwise, replace heater.
Once heater starts work at regular interval controlled by thermostat and timer, defrost will be good and effective cooling will also be in fridge compartment.

Refrigerator is warm @ 60 degrees and the freezer is still freezing happens every so oftern

If the evaporator coils behind the back panel of the freezer are icing up because of auto defrost failure that will stop the circulation of cold air and eventually affect the freezer too.

check defrost timer, defrost heater, defrost thermostat. In most newer models the timer has been replaced by an electronic control board. If the heater and thermostat are ok it’ll be the control.

The fridge gets its cold air from the freezer through a vent between the freezer and fridge. The fan in the freezer blows air through it. There is a flap you adjust with the fridge temp. control. Make sure it's opening and closing when you adjust the fridge temp ..

I understand your frustration. Below are some diagrams and troublshooting aids. If you look at the exploded parts diagram link and select the Wiring Information page, you'll see the defrost timer is on the FF harness, which is the "Fresh Food" compartment.

Next, click in the "Controls" page. Item #12 is the defrost timer. It looks like it is in light assembly / cover in the fresh food compartment as it has 2 light bulbs shown - and the freezer has only 1.

Freezer not freezing solid. Pulled off back

Your not going into defrost, the fridge cycles into defrost every 8-10hrs for approx 20mins....problem could be multile items, the defrost time, defrost thermostat, or the defrost heater, will need a meter to ohm heater and thermostat...thermostat will be a closed circuit when it gets below 22degrees. ohm the heater out...if both check ok, will be a timer issue. Can do a simpler check....in the fridge section near controls there is a smal hole with a gear on the inside....that is your defrost timer. take a falt tip screwdriver and turn that gear until it clicks, this will put the fridge into defrost...if everything on the heater side is ok you will hear a sizzle from the ice melting

I have an Amana bottom freezer, model BX20S5E that is not cooling properly in either compartment. I have replaced both the defrost thermostat and defrost timer (new). Still no change... what I do notice is...

check door gaskets and see if problem is moisture,or air gate to fridge compartment not working properly.I would recomend verifying defrost cycle is working by turing defrost timer to defrost cycle,it will click when engaged when unit is frozen and heater should come on if all is well,if not heater is probably culpret if the rest is new.
