Question about Alpine CDA-7940

1 Answer

Connecting the speakers to the Alpine CDA-7940

I understand all the wiring on the harness except for the orange (illumination) wire. What do I connect that to? Also, what wiring do I use to connect the regular 6"x9"(rear), 3"(front dash) and 6"(front doors) speakers with? The connections out from the unit are plugs. Thanks for any kind of help.

Typically the orange wire in a car stereo are connected to the + always on ( it's usually for back up memoru). ordinary AWG # 18 flat cord will be sufficient for the purpose

This particular Alpine unit, the CDA 7940 is a Tuner only, it does not have internal amplification, so in order to connect your speakers you will need an outboard 4 channel amplifier. Alpine does sell a "power pack" which is a tiny 4 channel amp meant to plug into the existing alpine harness and give 45 watts to 4 channels, but I'm not sure if it requires the newer decks, or if it requires an internal amp to get its signal from.

The Orange Illumination wire only applies to certain cars that have dimmable dash lights, if you attach this wire, your radio LCD will dim along with the rest of the dash lights.

I have a cda. 9887. It powers on but gets no sound from any of the speaker wires. What could be wrong. What can I try.

Most Alpine CDA units come with an option to turn on/off the internal amplifier in order to give you better sound when connecting an external amplifier. Try turning on IC

Is the CDA-7892 supposed to have a backlight when off?

Hello ckabee1,

The "illumination" lead on the CDA-7892 is ORANGE and terminated with a spade lug. It should be connected to the appropriate instrument panel light lead from the vehicle wiring harness. You can download a copy of the manual here with all of the wiring color codes. If you do not know the vehicle color code, you can probably find it at www.modifiedlife.com. Just click on "Car Stereo Wiring Diagrams" at the top and select your vehicle make, model and year.

Hope this helps.

You could get a stereo installation kit for your year, make & model, that comes with a pigtail plug that would plug right into the existing harness plug and prevent you from having to hack up your original wiring harness.

If not....

Car Radio memory Constant 12v+ Wire: Orange
Car Radio Accessory Switched 12v+ Wire: The radio harness does not provide a switched power source. Run a wire to the fusebox for switched power.
Car Radio Ground Wire: Black/White
Car Radio Illumination Wire: Gray
Car Stereo Dimmer Wire: Brown
Car Stereo Antenna Trigger Wire: Pink
Car Stereo Amp Trigger Wire: N/A
Left Front Speaker Positive Wire (+): Tan
Left Front Speaker Negative Wire (-): Gray
Right Front Speaker Positive Wire (+): Light Green
Right Front Speaker Negative Wire (-): Dark Green
Left Rear Speaker Positive Wire (+): Brown
Left Rear Speaker Negative Wire (-): Yellow
Right Rear Speaker Positive Wire (+): Dark Blue
Right Rear Speaker Negative Wire (-): Light Blue

Good luck

Need pinout for Alpine CDA-7940 head unit

facing the back of the 7940 the top left corner is pin 16 the top right corner is pin 9. The bottom left is pin 8 and the bottom right is pin 1. Only a few of the 16 pins are used due to this unit only having pre-outs, no internal amplifier on this unit. Pin 1 red (ignition), Pin 2 pink/black (interrupt), Pin 3 orange (Illumination), Pin 8 black (ground), Pin 9 blue (power antenna), Pin 10 blue/white (remote turn on), Pin 16 yellow (battery).
