Culligan Silver Water Softener - Continues to Run

I have a Culligan Silver series water softener. It's acts like it has gone into regenerate mode but can not shut itself off. The water just continues to run. It has a digital screen, and it has the ''telephone'' icon lit up which means to call Culligan for service. That's an expensive route, so I was hoping to find some answers from the Fixya experts. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Jason

Too strong for me to ever want to deal with them again. We've had this softener for about 4 years and have had nothing but trouble. This makes the second time I have had the problem described above. The first time they came out and replaced the pistons inside the valve. Expensive and I don't want to do it again. I hope we can find a solution soon.

This stupid softener. Never again will I buy a culligan. Replaced the pistons 2 months ago...same problem has returned. I'm thinking of trying the
"sledgehammer solution" at this point. Wouldn't get me soft water, but it would sure make me feel good!

WHERE IS OUR SOFT WATER!? A few years back we had the Culligan man out to check our water because it was not soft (at the time, we had the Culligan Mark 100 model). After testing our water, the suggested...

The most frequent causes for intermittent hard water would be the gallon settings set too low causing the softener to run out of capacity or a meter that is not measuring the gallons. I would set the "hardness" setting on your culligan softener 30% higher than actual hardness. The softening resins they use are low in crosslink and very inefficient. Also make sure there are no toilets leaking causing hard water to "bleed" through softener. Iron filters require regular maintenance to clear oxidized iron from nozzles and the valve. Generally it is better to have the iron filter regenerate at least every 3 days to keep the bed refreshed.

What is Salt Bridging in a Culligan Water Softener

Salt bridging can occur in any water softener "salt tank". A salt bridge occurs when a hard crust of salt develops across the salt tank when the salt wicks up moisture. The salt does not fall down in the salt tank in between regenerations and a "bridge" occurs. It may look like the salt tank is full but there will be a hollow area at the bottom of the salt tank and not enough salt to develop the proper brine for regeneration of softener. This generally happens when the salt tank is a least 1/2 full of salt. If the system has a separate salt tank, shaking the tank will break the bridge usually. Gently poking a stick at the bridge can break it up also but can damage the salt grid if you poke the stick too far down in the salt tank. Certain salts, such as pellet salt are highly prone to this problem. Using Dura Cube, Hardi Cube or Solar salt will greatly reduce the chance of bridging. Any time a salt bridge occurs it will take 3 regenerations of the water softener (in 24 hrs), after fixing it, to regain the reserve capacity and totally soft water.

Culligan medallist softener will not regenerate unless done manually, not sure how to set different locations. 1 set to present time, 2-2:00 am, 3-10, 4-10, 5-10, 6 is set to 71 degrees, 9 is set to U, 10...

How do you know it is not regenerating? When hard water occurs through system it may still be regenerating but not drawing brine or refilling the salt tank properly. First check to see if it is metering the gallons. Run water and check for the flashing icon. If it is not metering the gallons, the meter is bad, dirty (iron buildup) or the board is bad. Clean the eductor assembly on top of valve (under chrome plate) this may be plugged.
Here is a link to the manual for your medallist softener.

kissfreak-

Yellow water sounds like a problem with iron. Unfortunately, a water softener is designed to remove calcium, primarily. It will remove a little iron but not much. An iron filter system is the preferred method for removing iron.

Hold the REGEN button down for 5 seconds. This initiates a manual regeneration. You can step the unit through the cycles by pressing the UP arrow.

Regeneration is nightly as oppsoed to the prrprogrammed 14 days

"DAYS00" indicates it is set to run every day. You may have lost power and it reset to factory settings. If the Gold series softener you have is the Aqua Sensor model (this is a probe in the resin tank that senses a change in the water chemistry and sends a signal to regenerate) the probe can get coated with iron and will either send NO signal or a Constant signal which will make it regen every night.
Usually a Gold series softener is either set up as metered or aqua sensor. There is an option for an override (such as 14 days) or it can be set up as a time clock model. Unplug the softener for 2 minutes and plug back in, re-program the controls to "DAY14". Make sure what the system is suppose to be set up as, Meter, AS, Time Clock.
Here is a link to Culligan for the Gold manual.

Culligan medalist softener: Water continues to run thru drain line even after regeneration ends. What to do?

Its a most common problem with culligan seal pacs. If your softener is under 5 years old you have the worst softener on the market. Culligan was bought out about 5 years ago by a canada group. they changed every thing and nothing is made in the usa any more. You will have to buy a new one from culligan and pay over 90.00 for it. The old seal pacs lasted 15 years or more now your lucky if you get 2 years.
