There is a switch on the front of the camera (by the lense) that says manual/sevro, turn it to sevro and your zoom button should work again.

(obviously when it's set to manual you need to turn it by hand)

- do not turn it by hand when it is set to sevro because it's bad for the motor

Yes. You won't have the same macro focussing ability at all focal lengths.

But usually the important thing is that it's not how close the camera can focus, but how large the image is, so you'll often find that a longer focal length (i.e. not wide angle) will produce a larger image of the object even though the camera has to further away to achieve focus. This also results in less distortion as extreme close-ups in wide angle produce extreme perspective distortion. It's why a wide angle close up of a face results in an exaggerated nose and mouth.

I need a manual for AF 35-70mm f2.8 D zoom nikkor - no idea how to use this lens.

i was not able to find a manual - this review may help http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/3570.htm
The lens consists of
  1. Zoom
  2. Focus
  3. Aperture
  4. Macro
1) Zoom - this is by push pull - so you push the lens out to wide angle 2) To switch to manual focus - will need to be done on the camera and then you can use the front control ring to focus - 4) also you can use the button to switch to macro mode - BUT only with the Zoom at 35mm - lens fully extended 3) You have an aperture range of 2.8 - 22 this varies the amount of light allowed into the lens - 2.8 is the most light - F4 to F5.6 to F8 - each change halfs the light allowed in - so changing from F4 to F5.6 half the light

Zoom button is malfunctioning

tons of people w/ any canon elura series cameras including myself, with a canon elura 80 have the same zoom problem. It does not appear that canon has done anything to try to solve this mass problem with this series of cameras. Oddly enough the only way to solve this problem is to give it a tap and gentle hits near the zoom button to release what would seem to be a jam. Sorry that there's really no straight forward answer, but for now its the best i can give.

Losing focus

Usually this is a back focus problem; also called a flange back adjustment.  If the back focus adjustment is possible on this camera, zoom out wide - open iris all the way - and adjust focus and lock position.

S70 Macro Focus Problem?

The macro is good at 4cm at wide angle, 8inches at full telephoto(different distances for any focal length in between). I read that someplace in the manual, I believe.
