    Redhaze,

Thanks for you quick reply. I looked under the hinge of the freezer door and all I see if a water line. The weird thing is that after i unplugged the fridge and let it sit a while, then plugged it back in. It seems to be starting to cool again. Can this be? Do they just quit working and start working again?

    Thanks

    Jk

Hi,

There are 2 Scenario's -

1.Refrigerator QUIT cooling
2.Refrigerator is not cooling well.

I Believe in the problem you described above , there might be few possibilities.

Note - Is the thermostat knob turned to the proper setting? If not, reset it.

Next, see if the compressor motor is running

The compressor is a football-sized case with no apparent moving parts. It's on the outside of the refrigerator at the back near the bottom. If it is humming or making a continuous noise and your refrigerator is still not cooling, there may be a more serious problem with one or more of several different components, we recommend contacting a qualified appliance repair technician for further help.

If the compressor is not running but you do have power to the refrigerator, there may be a problem with one or more of these:

  • The compressor

  • The Thermostat

  • The overload, relay, or capacitor

  • The defrost timer

  • The condenser fan motor

  • To check Compressor, follow the below guidelines :-

    http://www.acmehowto.com/howto/appliance/freezer/check/compressor.php

Note - You would need to put an amp-meter on the circuit to see what the current draw is like.If the compressor is shorted to ground you cannot check the amp draw because it will constantly kill the circuit breaker. A better way to go would be to check the continuity of the compressor to ground and each winding.

To check Thermostat, follow the below guidelines :-

To check Relay, follow the below guidelines :-

To check Defrost Timer, follow the below guidelines :-

To check Condenser Fan Motor, follow the below guidelines :-

Check the wires in the harness down inside of the lower hinge of the freezer door. I've seen them wear and short out against each other causing this type of intermittent problem. It can be related to the control board problem and your model# is one that is covered for the repair by what my paper work shows. Just google the GE phone # and give them a call.

On the back right side facing the refrigerator at the bottom is a connector for a quarter inch water line. Sometimes you have to loosen the back to access this. Hook your water line up here.

edtorres: if the freezer side and ice maker are working fine then the problem may be the damper that allows cooling into the refrigerator side is having trouble opening or the controls to the damper are defective.

The icemaker is bad . You have an electronic icemaker and the internal boards cannot take the freezing and the heat (freezing moisture) . Just replace the icemaker .

Plug it in and turn on icemaker. this part problably just lead back to squre one. have someone push the button for water while you are listening at back bottom for humming sound,if you dont hear it its probably a bad water valve.
