Question about D-Link ADSL2/2+ Modem/Wireless Router 4-Port Switch, 802.11g, QoS (DSL-2640B)

1 Answer

Low signal strength 10 meters away from the router using my dell

I got a DSL-2640U wireless router and configured it with the help of my ISP in Egypt. I have an iMac with 2 operating systems (windows XP and Macintosh). The ISP asked me to switch to Windows XP as he doesn't work with Macintosh. Now my home area is 135 square meters and the router is placed at one end of the house. If I go 10 meters away from the router the signal is very low using my Dell Laptop and my Wii sports game.

If your trouble is with several computers in your network, the issue is most likely with the router or networking equipment (configuration or hardware trouble), if it is a single computer it may be a software, virus or configuration issue, or possibly a bad wireless radio card. We have a computer repair shop called 600Monkeys in West Des Moines Iowa (http://600monkeys.com) and commonly see issues like this. My estimate is: if this is the only computer with trouble, and the operating system is running well, it has a bad networking adapter.

My belkin wont keep connection

1. Powercycle your equipment (unplug the power to your router and your modem)
2. Wait 15 seconds then plug equipment back in.
3.If your Modem runs off signal from a tower try and get more signal simply by moving modem closer to a window.
4.Check your connections to the modem and to the router, ensure the wires are plugged all the way in.
5.Using your wireless signal from your computer pc or laptop ensure you have sufficient signal you may have to move closer to the router, once in a while you will be to far from your router to have a good connection.
6. Make sure the ventilation slots on modem and router are not blocked.
7.Check to see how far your modem is away from any electrical equipment your modem should be away at least 3 feet away.
8. If you are able to keep connection directly plugged into your modem from your computer most likely there is an issue with the router, In this case you can always reset your router there may be a configuration error in your router, To reset simply press and hold reset button on the back of the router for approximately 15 seconds or until router restarts, Caution by resetting your router will reset back to factory default and your router will be unsecure once again.
9. When your are disconnected from the internet make sure that the Connection itself isnt still connected if your connection itself is connected and you are unable to get online you may need to renew your ip address. usually your ip address automatically renew's once the router and modem have been powercycled (unplugged and plugged back in) however you may need to manually renew your ip.
10.Windows Xp: Start/Run/CMD and press ok
A.Type ipconfig /release
B.Type ipconfig /renew
Windows Vista/7 Start/All Programs/Accessories/Right click on command prompt and hit run as administrator.
A.Type ipconfig /release
B.Type ipconfig /renew then restart your computer
If you are a Mac user:Here is a link to show you how to renew http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1920 If your continue to get disconnected contact your ISP (Internet Service Provider) Check and ensure that it is not an issue on there end

It seems that the signal is strong next to the router, but drops to 1 bar within 30 feet away? What is the most likely solution.

Hi,
Routers generally have a strong signal for up to 10 meters. However no obstacles should be in the way. 30 feets is about 10 meters so the router is loosing its signal strength. If you would like to extend the strength of your router you can buy a range expander. This device acts as a repeater of the signal so from 10 meters you can go to 15 or 20 meters.

I am running qwest DSL through a Linksys wrt160N that is brand new. it will work next to the router, but not upstairs or in the basement which is less than 15 meters. The upstairs bedroom is directly above...

If you have concrete floor slabs the the wireless signal from the Linksys will have a difficult time penetrating the floor slabs.
The wireless card in the computers will show a low signal strength.
Try altering the Linksys aerial to a horizontal position and also positioning the Linksys to another location.

You could be getting interference form other wireless sources, check the wireless channels of other wireless router/access points in your area. If they are broadcasting on the same channel then configure your Linksys to broadcast on an unused channel or one that has the weakest signal strength.
If none of these methods work then I would suggest you run network cables from the Linksys to upstairs and downstairs and not use the wireless connection.
If network cabling option is not an option then consider extending the wireless range with wireless repeater access points.

Wireless icon shows full strength however internet does not work. Internet button blinks.

Has your wireless router/modem been configured to your ISP's instructions.
The blinking PPP or Internet LED means the wireless router is not connecting to your ISP.
You should also contact your ISP to get them to test the connection to your router/modem especially if you have a DSL modem.

Wireless signal degredation

Disable and renable wireless card, even try unistalling the wireless card and reinstall it. update driver for wireless card. then if those fail, put pc next to router if signal still bad then card needs replaced. If your ISP didnt have you power off the router for 30 sec then do so.
