Compressor fan cycles on and off .1986 carrier mo#38eh0363300l

Fan runs about 10 seconds and turns off . Comes back on for 10 seconds and turns off again Repeats cycle over compressor. It has a black round thing that looks like a start up capacitor and a silver cannistor in the wiring department. Are either one of these things bad? Please reply J.R. Peters

If your compressor is working continously, you most likely have a hi/lo fan cut out switch. What is the temp outside? If the temp is not real hot, it's normal for hi/low cutouts to cycle. You may need to adjust the pressures of the hi/low cutout and will need guages.

Usually compressors cycle on and off due to the low preasure switch which disconects the compressor when their is a freeon leak. Put the gages on it and see if the preasures are correct.

My condenser fan is running backward

An abrupt cycle of power can cause a motor to run backwards. If you turn the power off again and wait 10 seconds or so (enough for blade to stop spinning) it should run the right way. Put the capacitor back the other way and try again.

carrier gas furnaces will try to light three times then will usually go on a lockout for one hour you can bypass the lock out by resetting the power, turn furnace on, remove wires from gas valve, you will need a multi meter to check for voltage to valve, if control board sends a call to the gas valve the valve is bad, if voltage is never present during the lighting cycle your control board is bad

are you sure the compressor is running or is it just humming trying to start then clicking out on the overload, if so you have a 50\50 shot of the relay being bad, otherwise the compressor is shot

Side by side not cold

compressor overheated or stuck. also check starter relay...maybe broke.
if ever thing is alright,

let it stand for about 4 hours unplugged to cool the compressor.

plug it after 4 hours and if the compressor would still run for 10 seconds, then you have a faulty compressor.

tnx 4 using fixya,

Central Air Conditioner

Turn the power to the indoor unit off. Remove the cover where the fan is. Feel the motor of the fan. If it is very hot the bearings have likely gone out. If the fan is cool to the touch I would call a service company because you likely have an electrical problem that will require some training to solve.

COLMAN TSR

3000 Watts is a little short on the power necessary for the compressor to restart. When it compressor starts it may draw 27 amps or more for a split second. 3000 / 120 = 25 amps. when the fan slows down it is telling you the voltage has dropped and it doesn't have enough power. After the pressure has balanced out in the A/C system the compressor can start against no pressure difference.

Compressor Stopping

compressor is running overloaded possible problems bad relay/overload /capacitor dirty or clogged condensers if the unit uses a condenser fan suspect a bad fan. and defective thermostats are notorious for short cycling. id check the coils first and if dirty clean up maybe that can be the major problem.
