How is the freezer? if it is ok is the freezer back panel full of frost if so then you have a defrost problem and the ge is really good for the heating elements to go bad

  • Mark Nichols Jun 26, 2009

simple hand tools 1/4 nut driver or drill or something to take the back off and you can usually visibly see the element bad....

  • Mark Nichols Jun 26, 2009

if you said there was frost on the back of the freezer then you have to take that off back there.... inside the freezer

  • Mark Nichols Jun 26, 2009

if you are worried im going to charge you im not its free! i can send the part to you cheaper than my competitors too..

  • Mark Nichols Jun 26, 2009

ok, yea take the back panel off then find the glass element there may be one or 2 , but take them off by the 2 phillips screws, and if it is all black and what not its bad, to be sure you can check continuity on it.

  • Mark Nichols Jun 26, 2009

yea you can remove it ...but before you do make sure you have continuity on the defrost termination or its not puffed up quater size half inch thick top right corner.... after that if its ok defrost it and yes the heater is glass the glass sometimes will look black or it is broke or the wires look like they are going to fall off... wished you would have called...

  • Mark Nichols Jun 26, 2009

ok i will be .... in the mean time try and find the defrost thermostat and the two screws for the heating element and get a hair dryer ready

  • Mark Nichols Jun 26, 2009

well can you leave the refrigerator unplugged over night? if so then do you just want to call me tomarrow morning? if not put it all back and stick everything in the freezer and then call me tomarrow when you got a hair dryer

My GE 19.7 TFX20JR only partially freezes in certain areas and not cold on refrigerator side. This all happened at the same time it stopped making ice. Water still dispenses.

Check for frozen, iced over evaporator coil caused by defective defrost timer and/or heating element. Ice maker will not work unless freezer temp is around 10 degrees or less.

I have a G E TFX20Jr side by side it runs all the time, everything works fine. My eggs are frozen in the firg. side. What is my most likely prob?

Sounds like a thermostat stuck. Clean condenser and check any fans are running fine. If turning the thermostat down stops it running all the time, all the better!

Not cooling properly GE TFX20JR i tried the defrost timer and it is working, now what other possibly problems could there be? thanks!

Do you have ice /frost buildup on freezer wall?If so auto defrost is not working.3 possible causes ,turn the defrost timer manually to defrost position either measure amps @ 3.5 amps or listen in freezer section for crackling popping or sizzling. If you dont hear/measure this you have a bad heater or defrost tstat .Remove freezer wall look at top of coil for thermodisc 2 wires and 1 or 2 glass heaters (btm, mid coil).Tsat can be bypassed by connecting the 2 wires or checked for continuity closed at approx 20'.heaters may be visibly burnt or broken recommend changing both parts

Not cooling properly GE TFX20JR

Your refrigerator has a defrost thermostat inside the fresh food section behind the light cover and control panel. Need you to turn it clockwise slowly until the compressor stops. Leave it like that and after 30 minutes or less it does not restart you will need to replace the timer. The defrost timer is part number WR9X489
You should hear sounds from freezer with door open like sizzling or crackling. That would be the defrost working. If there is no defrost during this time. let me know so we can look into the defrost element and defrost thermostat as possible problems. Visit my site and enter the model or part number into search feature. That takes you to your model. Any questions or help from me, just let me know, Thanks, Sea Breeze

Mar 11, 2009 | GE (PSS26MSRSS) Side by Side Refrigerator

1 Answer

GE TFX20JR BK WW side by side won't cool or freeze

First point: The entire fridge is cooled by the freezer section. A fan blows air across to the food section.
2) Every 8 hours or so, a timer shuts off the compressor cycle, and starts up a heater to defrost the freezer coils. If the heater(s) are burnt out, or if the safety thermostat (to prevent overheating) is open, then you will have no defrost. The coils will frost up and eventually prevent airflow to the food section. Milk goes sour.
3) In rare circumstances, the timer itself can stall. This cause the same symptoms as above, but this is not as common as the other 2 causes of No Defrost.
Sequence: Check heater continuity. Check safety thermostat continuity while cold. Check defrost timer operation.
Hope this helps. I am a journeyman with 39 years exp. Happy New Year.
