I recently bought a Sylvania 7 inch netbook sold at CVS.\r\nIt states to activate WI Fi to click on wifi icon on bottom right of screen. If icon is not available to press FN + F9 When I press FN+F9...

Your OS should have an icon on the desk top that says WIFI Power, it is blue in color and this icon turns the WIFI on and off. When the button says off, the WiFi is on, the idea is that it is waiting for you to turn it off. If that is not on your desk top, turn the machine over and look for a small hole 1in diagonally right of the data plate. insert a tooth pick in that hole a depress gently to reset your machine.

It is looking for a password (WiFi Network Key) You have to double click on the little computer icon down in the right tool bar area, the one with the two side radiating arcs, and possibly has a small red X under it. The red X indicates that it is NOT connected. When you double click on that icon a window called RT28701 opens up, then you click on Wireless Information tab, then you cursor down to the name of your WiFi and high light it and click the connect box. Then another window opens up called Network Properties. Uncheck "The key is provided automatically" box. This will allow you to type in your "Network Key", the password that protects your network from outsiders. This "KEY" was set up when you installed the router on your server computer. If this does not work at first, turn the machine over on it's back and using a toothpick, insert it into the little hole about an inch diagonally from the right corner of the data plate, this will re-load a new copy of everything including the WiFi RT28701 driver.
sometimes this driver gets confused. See my TIP at:

I could not get my sylvania netbook to connect to my wifi so i download the update from their website to a SD card then opened on the netbook and it deleted everything on the netbook. how can i restore it...

I do not know why your icons disappeared by running the Download, but your programs are still in the on board ROM memory and what you are missing are your desk top icons. I have tried to duplicate your download problem but so far have not been able. I know that using a SD card will not download a usuable file so I used a thumb drive.

Any way please read the following solution that I wrote to another poster.

If you have deleted the icons for those programs on your desk top, then they may be in your Recycle trash bin. double click on Recycle Bin look for the icon for recorder, right click on recorder and select restore. You really cannot delete the programs from your machine as they are retained in a ROM chip , hard coded into the chip and are loaded each time you cut your machine on. The only thing you can do is delete the icons on the desktop, which are sent to the recycle bin.
To retore the machine to factory settings, there is a small hole just about an inch down from the data plate on the back. Using a pencil point or a straightened paper clip, insert the bject into the hole and hold for about 5 seconds. Your deleted icons are not replaced.
A second method to restore your icon is to click on my computer right click on the recorder, select copy, dismiss my computer, find a blank spot on your desktop and right click on that spot, select paste, and a dos type icon appears as your recorder button. When you cut the machine of and back on the Dos type icon is replaced with a CE type icon
To restore all icons:
You can: If you can click on start, click on run, type desk top into the open space and ok it. your icons should be shown. you will have to copy and paste each one back to your desk top, or select edit and then select select all, then click on file, select send to, and select desk top as short cut. Is your machine comming on at all? You may have just wiped out the icons on your Desk Top.

"logging off" ... it never ends. now what?

From your start menu, choose computer, at the top of that window hit system properties, on the left hit system protection, It should be open to the system retore page, Hit the system restore button. What you want is to restore to the last day your computer shut down right. For me that was just before the last windows update on 5/7/2009 when my computer as well started not shutting down. The system restore doesn't erase any of your files it just restores the system files and drivers back to the date you specify. Worked for me!

I found the fix a year ago but now cant remember how to fix this. My Medion desk top wont recognize the photo card drives. It was something like turn off CPU, turn off switch in back, hold down front...

Problem fixed. Shut down the CPU, then flip the switch on the back tothe off position. While in the off position, push in on the power button on the front as if you wanted to start it up. Leave it pushed in for several seconds. Then release, turn back switch back to on, and THEN fire up the CPU. Icons for card reader should be restored.

No external drive icon on desk top

This happened to me as well - i have been reading that it could be the power supply adaptor. If you can try another one - it might solve the problem. The adaptors seem to either be faulty or made to stop working. Great news for us the consumer!!
