How to Troubleshoot a Gas Range Oven That Won't Heat
By Kefa Olang, eHow Contributor
Although gas range oven may prove useful for cooking and baking, they may fail to ignite if they aren't properly maintained and set up. Lighting a gas range often involves simply turning a knob; however, blockages from food particles and debris caught in the burners, improper burner cap installation and gas supply are common problems that interfere with your gas range oven's performance. A few troubleshooting guidelines may solve these problems safely.

Instructions
    • 1
Check you have gas in your tank if your gas range oven won't heat. Contact your gas supplier if you've run out of gas.

    • 2
Clean the burners if you have gas but your burners still won't ignite. To clean the burners, lift the burner caps 9b4f010f-be4f-4db6-8a88-4c3fd17e3339.gif
    • 3
Inspect the small vertical holes on the side of your burners for dirt, food and debris. The gas won't ignite if they are clogged. Scrape dirt, debris and food from the vertical holes using a pointy object such as a toothpick or paperclip.

    • 4
Reinstall the burner caps properly. If they are tilted or wobbly, the gas may not ignite. Install the caps on the right burners. Some burners are smaller than others, so match the caps to the appropriate burners.

    • 5
Move the burner knob to the "Lite" position and wait for the gas to ignite. If it ignites, rotate the knob to your desired setting. If it doesn't ignite, contact a qualified appliance technician.

My Electrolux Eog6330xn oven cuts out after about an hour and the ignighter then constantly sparks. the oven then has to be turned off to cool down before it will relight. Any advice.

Hello there Gary and welcome to FIXYA

Usually when an oven won't bake properly or stops baking , it's because the bake igniter is weak or burned out. The igniter is a small, round or rectangular device, that's about 1 inch by 4 to 8 inches. It's near the burner itself. The burner is the tube-type device the gas flows through before it's ignited. It has many small holes on the sides to let the gas, when ignited, form a long, low flame. If the igniter is weak, if it glows red but doesn't get hot enough, or if it's burned out, the gas doesn't flow to the burner and the burner won't ignite. If this is the problem, you may need to replace either the igniter or the gas safety valve. Usually the igniter is to blame. I would disconnect the power to the oven then unplug the wiring assy and remove the part then clean all of the terminals really good then reassemble it then try the oven again if it still does not work properly i would go ahead and replace that part ok
Please keep me posted on how this is going i can give you more help but this is the most common problem ok?
Best regards Mike

Hello,

FOR THE OVEN NOT HEATING

The problem beleive it or not is that the bake igniter is weak ,and it is not drawing the proper amprage to open the gas valve. If you have a amp meter access the wires to the bake igniter(usually behind the storage drawer) and check for 3.3-3.6 amps when oven is set to bake by clamping the meter around ONE wire wire of igniter make sure only one wire, either one and not both.
if amp draw less than 3.3-3.6 amps replace bake igniter. I know it seems improbable that if the igniter comes on that it could be the problem.Professional appliance technicians who would charge a average of $250.00 to repair your oven, have found when the igniter comes on yet the oven won't heat that a weak igniter is the cause 100% of the time

FOR THE SURFACE BURNER NOT LIGHTING The holes on the burner espically those around where the electrode are dirty/clogged. By using a paper clip/safety pin to push in and clear the holes then clean the burner up with some steel wool the burner should light. GENE

My oven takes a long time to light and there is a strong smell of gas..why?

This can be caused by a weak/inop hot surface igniter ,defective gas control valve or debris in the burner orfice/venturri. The gas odor is going to be caused by unburned gas due to a by-passing gas control valve or a weak igniter(not lighting the gas coming from burner) First you will need to verify that the hot surface igniter is coming on(you should see it glow in the burner compartment). If it is not glowing then you will need to verify that the wiring harness has voltage to it when the oven thermostat is on. Also check the igniter for any cracks or damage and if found then replace the igniter. If it is glowing then one thing that you can try(be very careful doing this) is to give the gas control valve a light tap with something hard like a wrench when the oven is turned on,igniter is glowing but the burner is not on. You will need to remove the broiler/storage drawer at the bottom of the oven. Once you pull the drawer out you should see the gas control valve at the back of the range. Try turning on the oven and lightly tapping the valve housing after the igniter is fully on. This may loosen up any debris inside the control valve housing that might be causing the by-passing problem. If the oven burner comes on when tapping the valve then try completely turning the oven on and back of several times. And when I say completely I mean turn it on after the igniter is not glowing and burner has shut off. This works about 30% of the time. If the burner control valve sticks again after trying this procedure then it could be the control valve and/or the hot surface igniter defective. The hot surface igniter would need to be disconnected from it's harness and tested with an OHM meter. Most igniters should have a 500 to 700 OHM reading. If you get a reading that is way off then the igniter is defective and replace it. If the igniter tests good then the gas control valve is suspect and replace it. Most appliance parts retailers will test your igniter for free. When the igniter is on it should glow very brightly. If it is dim then that is a sure sign it is bad. Also inspect the burner venturii and burner orfice for any possible debris(grease, lint ect) that could be restricting gas flow. One more thing you can try is to manually light the burner. Make sure the oven and burner compartment are COMPLETELY cleared out of gas. Then make sure there is a flame from a match or lighter right next to the burner where the igniter is located(it is best to use a long fireplace match) before starting oven. Once the flame is lit and next to the burner then turn on the oven thermostat and listen for the flow of gas. Once the flow has started the oven burner should light immediately! If the burner does not light within 2 seconds the remove the flame and shut down the oven. If the burner lights with the match then either the igniter is not hot enough to light the burner or there might be a restriction in the burner head blocking the flow of gas to the hot surface igniter...or a restriction in the venturri or orfice. You will need to be extremely careful performing these procedures! If you are smelling gas then the oven and burner compartment could fill up with enough gas to cause a delayed ignition! You could get burned or seriously injured so I advise you not to try these procedures if you are not experienced with gas appliances. You are taking your own risk trying these procedures and if you feel uncomfortable trying these then I suggest call a professional.

How do you light the oven? We turn the dial and

I take it the range is electric ignition because you say the top burners have a clicking(igniter) noise. If the top burners are electric ignition then the oven is also. The oven probably uses a hot surface igniter and that is why you do not hear any clicking. Turn the oven on and open the broiler compartment. You should see a bright glow from the hot surface igniter. If you do not see any glow there may be a grounding issue or the igniter could be bad. If you do see a glow but the burner does not come on in a few minutes then give the gas valve a tap with a wrench and see if the burner comes on. Shut it off and then back on several times. If the burner continues to light after this you may have fixed the problem. If it does not come on gas valve could be sticking or igniter is weak.
