My husband got home from work and said his ipod was fried. I didn't know what he meant until I felt it. It was SO hot. It finally cooled off, but won't turn on at all now. Is it gone?

- It has completely cooled down. We tried both of those things-no luck at all. No signs of life.
It might not be. If the device was nearly filled or was used for continued movie watching it might have simply shut down to avoid further overheating. And as with all electronic devices, direct sunlight is a sure way to overheat your device.
Allow the device to cool down and attempt to reset the ipod (center button and up on the wheel). Hopefully that should fix your problem, as your device probably went into a sort of self-defense mode before totally dying.
You might try to attach it to you computer and see if it begins to charge or shows any signs of change on the screen.

- Unfortunately it sounds like there might be a problem with your battery.
Depending on how long you've had this iPod the battery may have just worn out, as will eventually happen to all iPods. At that point you can attempt to get a new battery or just buy a new device.
You can try the first solution here although from what you've said I don't think it will work but it's always worth a shot.
