There is a circuit board and ribbon cable beneath the buttons on your camera, its possible the board went bad, or that the cable has been shifted/disconnected on accident. Was there any impact damage to the camera?

In the menu settings, you need to assign the Func button to do something. The Func button alone will not operate until you assign a task. The tasks available are listed in the menu setting for the Func button.
To change the size of existing pictures: Press the Playback button (right-pointing triangle). Press the MENU button and choose [RESIZE] and press FUNC/SET. Use left/right to select an image and press FUNC/SET. Use left/right to choose a size and press FUNC/SET.
To change the size the pictures are taken: After pressing the FUNC/SET button, use up/down to select the current image size (probably displayed as a rounded triangle and a capital "L"). Use left/right to select an option. L is 10 megapixels (3648x2736), M1 is 6MP (2816x2112), M2 is 2MP (1600x1200), and S is 0.3MP (640x480).
Now, ask yourself this: If you're going to be taking 6MP or smaller pictures, why did you bother to buy a 10MP camera?
I'm not sure if you are talking about the quick view of a picture just taken, or using playback mode to view shots taken. Either way, I suggest changing batteries so they are fresh.
There are 3 different LCD choices when in "Shooting Mode."
The display mode will change each time you press this button.
1- Standard (no info displayed, just pic)
2- Detailed (infor displayed)
If you have tried this, then you may want to perform a reset to the cam. This will reset any screen/LCD settings that may have been changed.
Goto the Setup Menu and select "Reset All." Select "OK" and press "Func. Set."
This reset WILL NOT reset the following:
-Current Shooting Mode
-Date/Time, Language, & Video System settings
-White Balance Data (of you have custom settings changed in the custom white calance function)
Are you able to take pictures with the shutter button, and do the pictures come out OK? If so then it's likely that you accidentally pressed the DISP button on the back of your camera. Press it once more to turn your display back on.
But if the pictures are also coming out black like the display, then the problem is more serious, and is likely a stuck shutter (this cannot be repaired by the average person). This would require professional repair. Call 1-800-OK-CANON to arrange repair.
To turn on the camera simply press the on/off button on the top of the camera. to view information about when the photo was taken ect. press "disp" button, when your camera is in the display setting (blue triangle).
