I have a Carrier Weathermaker model #38tdb060300 A/C system. How many tons is that? It is 11 yrs old, capacitor exploded and compressor is blown. Needing to replace.

Looks like a 5 ton unit. However, you might be better off finding a R-22 condensing unit to replace the entire outside unit. Reason being, if you just replace the compressor, you get a one year warranty. If you replace the whole outside unit, you get a 5 year warranty. You can replace the outside unit with any manufacturer, as long as it is the same tonnage and type (heat pump/air conditioner/single stage/ 2 stage ...).

My motion light on the garage comes on everytime my central air compressor kicks on outside my house.New 4 ton unit 1 year old,is this a short in the light problem or something else?

Hi,
No it is caused by the power fluctuation when the voltage drops from the compressor starting up...

You may have a bad connection from the power Co. power line or too light of wire coming into the house.

We are about to install a a new central heating & air conditioning unit in the family home where my brother lives. It has a 4 ton now. Can we up grade to a 5 ton? One dealer says yes- another says too...

Hi, go with the 5 ton unit. 12,000 btu's are not going to cause moisture or mold!! I have done this for 33 years, do know what I am talking about and would not steer you in the wrong direction. Go with the 5 ton unit, and remember this for some knoledge from me to you. For every ton of cooling, there are 12,000 btu's. You will find this number in the model number of the outdoor unit if it is a split, or on the pack unit data plate. Look for 060 on a 5 ton, and 048 on a 4 ton unit. Please rate me on this post and keep me posted on the out come.

Ruud 4.5 ton unit comes on but the compressor is noisy and it does not cool house....can compressors be replaced or can you put more oil in them....where can we purchase A replacement...

First, check the age of the unit. If it's less than 5 years old, the compressor may still be under warranty. You would be responsible for the labor portion.

Replacing an A/C compressor is not simple and requires special tools and training. Almost any local competent A/C shop should be able to replace a compressor if that is the problem.

You might want to call for service first before going any farther.

I have a GE model No. BTN 748A100A1 (central air outside unit). Serial number 40564128. When was it made? What is its efficiency? It now handles #1950 sq. ft. Cab it handle 2950 sq ft when I remodel?

GE stopped making AC units probably 20 years ago. The same unit will not handle an additional 1000 sq. ft. I believe it is a four ton unit and about a 6 SEER rating which is way down on the efficency scale. You will need a 5 ton system to handle 2950 sq. ft. The average SEER rating now is 13.5.

My ge ac model APE07AHM1 is not blowing cold air. What could be the problem?

This is an old question, but I am having the same problem with APE07AHM1 that I bought second hand. I'd like to recharge it.

The answer by binev_78 seems to be for outdoor AC compressor units but this is a portable stand alone unit, no outdoor unit.

I have a GE central air conditioner model

If you are talking about the indoor fan it is probably a bad capacitor. Replace the fan motor capacitor. And YES, if the fan motor needs replacing too, you can DO-IT-YOURSELF.

20 year old central a/c heater not working

Check your thermostat and mode selector setting, thermostat setting should be set at warmer and mode selector setting should be at low heat or hight this is applicable for manual unit.
If it is a remote control just set the remote to heat mode.
