Hi Spratty,

You can fix this problem simply by pulling the computer out, then looking for a blue vertical port (if you don't have a graphics card) or a blue Horizontal port (if you do have a graphics card, which is usually located at the bottom of the computer.)

Count the pins on the cable then count the pins on the port.

The end of the monitor cable should be Male which are pins only and the port should be Female which are slots where the pins go.

Make sure that the sides of the cable matches the sides of the port (which is a upward angle)

If you have anymore problems please let me know,

From your description you have a power supply problem, usually caused by defective capacitors, sometimes they will bulge at the top indicating an open condition. If you decide to repair check the inverter board that powers the back lights behind the screen, because they are also prone to bad caps.

Replacing laptop monitor. The new monitor

If it was not the right kind of LCD it may have blown the inverter (where the LCD connects and the cable going to the motherboard). You should order parts only from an authorized Gateway part reseller as advertised on the Gateway website. I have included a link to one such place below, where you can purchase a new inverter board and LCD screen if needed.

Good Luck,

Open the monitor, examine the circuit boards. Look for small components that look like small cans, these are capacitors. If you see any that look bulged on top, then your problem can probably be solved by replacing these. Check out the following sites;

Same issue with no words

This is usually caused by the cable between the monitor and computer being disconnected (or partially disconnected) or damaged. Video card failure on the computer can also cause this as well. If you have access to a laptop, or friends laptop, try plugging in the monitor to the laptop. If starts working correctly, then cable was unplugged or video card has failed in computer. Also check cable connection on back of monitor.

Try hooking the Laptop to an external monitor like from your desktop pc,,you can see the connection on the back of the laptop,,When you do this, and you can see Windows on the Desktop monitor,,then this would indicate that your Back light on your Laptop screen may have burnt out .

Monitor on a 400 vtx gateway

Check the output voltage of the invertor board , if its 150 volt (point of cold fusion lamp connection) then the drive electronics of the invertor board from the motherboard is damaging the new invertor boards which you are trying to replace. Check input to the invertor board it should be 5 Volts and 12 volts .
