Question about Garmin nuvi 885T GPS Receiver
Device turned on, and showed password screen, but the touch screen does not respond to any touches. the device is less than 6 months old. very dispointing performance!
I had the same problem and Garmin's answer when I emailed them was...
"There are a few things I would suggest, first we need to updated your
system software (firmware) on the unit. To update your system software
(firmware), download the WebUpdater at www.garmin.com/webupdater.
After this program installs, your unit will need to be attached to the
computer via the USB cable. The WebUpdater will attempt to update itself
and then search for your GPS unit. The program should then recognize the
unit and you will just need to click next and follow the instructions to
update your unit. When the system?s firmware is updated, you will have
the option to update additional software that is present on your unit.
It is best to look at this list as well and check any firmware or GPS
update that are available on this page.
Once the selected updates have download to your device, please
disconnect it from the computer and allow the unit to complete start-up,
during which it will ?unpack? and install all the software updates
downloaded to it.
Secondly, you may want to try a master reset, but be advised that this
may delete your favorites. To back up your Favorites folder, you will
need to connect the nüvi to your computer with the USB cable. Open the
nüvi drive in MyComputer and then open the Garmin folder. Then open the
GPX folder and copy the CURRENT.GPX file to your desktop. If the
Favorites are deleted in the master reset, you can just go back in and
copy the CURRENT.GPX file back into the GPX folder in the nüvi drive.
To perform a master reset, with your nüvi powered off, press and hold
the lower right corner of the screen. Next, turn the power on. Continue
to hold the screen until it asks if you really want to erase all user
data. Select yes. The screen will flicker a bit and then start up like
it did when it was first turned on. Follow the directions to set time
and location. You will have to reacquire satellites by turning on your
nüvi and letting it sit somewhere in full view of the sky. This one time
acquisition may take up to 20-30 minutes. The unit may still ask if you
are indoors or if you are in Kansas. This is normal. Just answer No to
both questions. If you are on the map or satellite data screen, the
green bar at the top will now read "Locating Satellites." Make sure you
leave the nüvi out for the full 20-30 minutes. If you move it or turn it
off early the initialization process may not complete.
After completing the system software (firmware) and master reset, go out
and test the unit, if still having problems, let me know. If you have
any other questions, please email or call us at 1-800-800-1020 from
8am-6pm Central time, Monday through Friday (excluding Holidays)."
