Question about Mountain Shimano Altus Front Bike Derailleur Bicycle Part 78

1 Answer

Shimano Altus gears

On my mountain bike I have Shimano Altus gears and recently it's been really difficult to change gears. Switching to lower gears is no problem, it's switching going higher that is the problem. The gear shifter going higher has no resistance and it takes some wiggling and pressing it different ways for it to sometimes work. Any idea what the problem is and can I fix it myself at home or should I bring it in to get repaired? Thanks!

The old lubricant has gummed up. It needs a good cleaning and relubrication.
"STI shifters gum up after years of use. I've had good luck with this method and since it's nearly free it's probably worth a shot--

"Get a can of WD-40 or a similar light solvent/oil solution. Pull the brake lever back to the bar to partially expose the shifting mechanism and generously hose down the interior with your solvent. I mean really get it in there from all directions, using the little red spray tube if possible. Let it sit for a while and then drizzle in some light oil like Tri-Flo or similar. Then wipe down the exterior of the shifter with some Simple Green or other degreaser (to keep the overspray off your hands).

"I've rescued two sets of STI-type shifters with this method. Hope you get your problem solved one way or another, because new Dura-Ace sure ain't cheap."

I have an electric RMartin R10H, and replaced the 9c motor hub. But, the derailed is no longer aligned. Cog needs to be moved outward by 3/8 inch or so. Is such an extender available?

Are adjustment screws all the way out? If so, frame won't accommodate this cog. ITs too wide. Sometimes a frame spreader will correct. This repair is difficult to do, contact local bike shop for assistance

I bought a mountain bike with Shimano Altus gears over the net with most of the assembly in place. Have indexed the rear gears which work fine. Did the same for the front deraileur works changing up but...

There are a couple of possible problems. You can try backing off the cable tension a little bit at the shifter and running back and forth through the gears adjusting as you go till it hits 2nd coming down. You can also try backing off the High limit screw on the derailleur. This will allow the shift to start a little farther from the bike hopefully hit 2nd. Hope this helps.

Maybe start here and if you can't figure it out, take it to a Bike Shop. Ther's only so much useful mechanical advice one can remotely lend with no details.

I don't know how to change gears on a diamond back 26" woman s bike

I think Diamondback gears are Shimano and should carry the Shimano part numbers or groupset description such as Altus. Given that info you should be able to find exploded parts diagrams and service info on http://techdocs.shimano.com/techdocs/index.jsp
