Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I have a new LaCie hard drive, Sam Hecht, 500 MB, serial number 1296903293115G. I am using a Mac OS X 10.5.6. My problem: The instructions say that when you want to disconnect the drive, you drag Mackintosh HD icon to the trash. Then it's safe to disconnect the LaCie. However, the HD icon does not disappear. (I can't believe it should!) My question: Is it then safe to disconnect the drive anyway? William Michael

This would mean it is somewhere (maybe by the OS) still in use. If you have any open files from the drive, close them and try again. If it still happens, its in use by the system. Technically its not "safe" to remove, but even if you do remove it now it is most likely nothing will go wrong, as is mostly the case.

If you want to be extra safe, simply restart the Mac, and it will dismount it safely upon restart.

Best regards

Why does my new 500gb lacie setup say 375.7 MB, Zero free?

Hi Anon
I think this is the setup disk, your 500gb disk will have have hundreds of gigabytes of free space, remember that 375.7 MB is roughly a third of 1 gigabyte.

An external storage-device has four major components:

* the USB cable

* the power-adapter

* the disk-drive inside the enclosure

* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

One of these components has failed.

Try a different USB cable.

Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting to a USB port on a different computer.

Take a "multi-meter" and measure both the voltage and amperage output from the AC adapter, and compare with the specifications on the label on the adapter.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and then connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it works at all.

Purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Get the part-number and serial-number from the label on your disk-drive, and access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status", to see if they will replace the device, at minimal cost to you.

There exist commercial "data recovery" services that can try to repair your device, just long-enough to rescue and copy your files. For example, see: https://services.seagate.com/index.aspx?lng=en-US for a "no data - no charge" guarantee.

I have a LaCie Rugged Drive, with multiple interfaces (USB, Firewire 400/800). Firewire interface works fine. When I plug the drive in the USB port, it won't mount (MacBook Pro OS X), and a faint beeping...

the problem is that your lacie drive operates using the NTFS (New Technology File System) under USB which is the standard file system of Windows. Apple mac is not interopable with native NTFS therefore you need to install a read-write NTFS file-system driver on your mac if you wish to use it via the USB connection.

an excellent free mac NTFS driver can be found here-
http://mac.softpedia.com/get/System-Utilities/NTFS-3G.shtml

download and install the software then restart your mac.

Mac OS can not repair a non-native partition like NTFS and will not mount a drive with errors. Repair the drive on the native system and this should resolve the problem.

The Mac OS can't natively write to NTFS (it can write to FAT32 however). But if you install MacFuse followed by NTFS 3-G on OS X then you'll be able to write to your NTFS drive.
