I recently purchased a Brother IntelliFAX 1820C , it was new old stock never used, the ink thacame with was expired but I tried it anyway as it looked ok. When it was installed the printer says "check cartridge" on the displayt it , I tried a few more times resetting the ink cartridges as the manual told me to do but it always says the same thing, is the ink the problem or is the printer defective? I hate to invest in new ink if the printer is defective.

The printer says that when you use other brands of ink other than recommended. I get it happening all the time. When it happens just press Stop/Exit and the printer will work fine.

If you are using Windows.
Go into "Start", "Printers and Faxes".
Right click on the printer icon.
Click properties.
Look for reset cartridge.
Or something similar.
That should fix the problem.

On the front of the cartridge there is a sight tube for the ink, the fax shines a light through this tube to detect the ink.
I wraped a piece of paper around the tube to block the light beam on all the cartridges.
I dont need a processer to tell me if the machine is out of ink, I can work thay out when it stops printing!!
Now tell me you are out of ink you peice of electronic ****.

Get a syringe, remove the needle, remove the ink cartridge and use the syringe to blow air GENTLY through the hole the cartridge connects to. Make sure you have a cleaning cloth to remove ink dislodged from pipe connected at the print head, do this gently to remove any obstruction and there should not be too much mess and can easily be cleaned up.
