Question about Canon PIXMA Pro9000 Photo Printer
I would start by removing the printhead and wiping any ink carefully from the bottom surface. Next unplug machine while the carriage is in the center, way over on the right is a wiping assembly that wipes the bottom of the printhead. Wipe any excess ink off these wipers with a q-tip or paper towel. Should help...

Are you sure you haven't confused the new and old cartridges? also make sure that any stickers that protect the contacts on the cartridge have been taken off.
