1 Answer

Is our microwave oven safe for the users? It still works but a spark has blackened an existing opening in the inside "ceiling" of the oven.

Thank you, this was the case. The cover had to be replaced, out of a mica sheet that was cut to size.

Quite often this is due to grease or food particles stuck somewhere in the cavity of the oven or stuck on or behind the waveguide cover.

The area will first have to be cleaned and sanded smooth and dried thoroughly.

If the cavity metal of the oven is cracked or split, you can use a small amount of steel-based epoxy such as JB-WELD to patch the crack or hole.

Once that dries thoroughly, you can sand it very smooth.

Then you can apply some high-temperature appliance paint, available from places like Wal-Mart, Lowe's or Builder's Square.

If your waveguide cover is burned, it will need to be replaced. It provides important protection for the magnetron.

For Sharp models, you can order parts from Encompass here or you can call them toll-free at 866-779-5835.

For many other brands, you can find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number from the tag on the oven here.

If you still have trouble or can't find parts at the above links, please reply back with your brand and model number so we can help you.

Our De Dietrich DME715X microwave oven is sparking from the ceiling - have tried a new wave guide cover but that did not work.

Some ovens have a tuning stub in the wave guide. If it has become loose or rusted, it could cause the problem. If that's the cause, you would have to transfer all of the oven's components to a new cavity. This is usually not done due to the cost, although I did do this once on an oven that was still under warranty.

Make sure the wave guide is clean inside.

Also check for rust near the wave guide cover. Re painting damaged areas might help.

Sparks fly, too, if the ovens contents do not contain enough water to absorb enough of the microwave energy. Leftover energy converts itself into electrical current in any conductive material (such as cavity panels).

Waveguide Cover

If the microwave is sparking or arcing the waveguide cover might be damaged and shorting out. Try removing the waveguide cover and see if the problem goes away. If there are any damaged spots in the microwave ceiling or sidewalls, repair them and paint them with microwave oven paint. Replace the waveguide cover if it is burnt or if it will not stay in place.

Microwave Oven Paint

If the microwave is sparking or arcing on the side walls the paint might have chipped causing pitting in the metal oven wall. Use microwave safe paint to touch up any bare metal spots.

Rack Support

If the microwave is sparking or arcing near one of the rack supports, remove the support, repaint any bare metal, install a new support.

The microwave oven is not safe to use, the fire has compromised the interior of the oven, if you run the microwave it will start to arc and eventually short out the magnetron, because the white enamel paint has been burned away. If you have holes in the ceiling there is danger of radiation leakage, for safety reasons the oven should be replaced.

We have a ge microwave. Sparks came out of

Quite often this is due to grease or food particles stuck to the inside of the oven or stuck on or behind the mica waveguide cover.

The waveguide cover is usually about the size of a playing card and often held in place by a plastic rivet.

Sometimes it is the ceiling of the oven.

Your owner's manual may address this. You can download GE owner's manuals and installation instructions here.

It can be fragile, and the metal edges of the oven behind it can be sharp, so be careful!

The cover and the metal behind it should be cleaned with a mild, non-ammonia cleaner.

If the cavity metal of the oven is chipped or charred, it will have to be sanded smooth and clean.

Then you can apply some high-temperature appliance paint, available from places like Wal-Mart or Lowe's.

If your waveguide cover is burned, it will need to be replaced.

Paint off inside top of microwave exposing metal. Safe to use?

It would be dangerous to do so. Any exposed metal inside a microwave is source for sparks and is extremely hazardous. I would recommend getting the paint job done up, or even better, buy a newer model.
