Chuck,
The 6 beeps are an error code. You should note a pattern such as 3 beeps, short pause, 1 beep, short pause, 2 beeps. Also, you may have a set of 4 error indicators on the back of the unit that will show a pattern of green and yellow lights. In any case, you will want to try to run the Dell diagnostics. Let us know the beep pattern and the light pattern and we should be able to give you some more specific information.

    Chuck,

The beep pattern is telling you that you have a memory problem and the light patterns are confirming that you have the same issue.

Power down your system, reseat your memory modules and try to power it back up. Before reseating the modules, take a look at the contacts and the socket to make sure there is no dust, lint or similar causing problems. Hopefully it will be as simple as that!! If that doesn't work, it sounds like a bad memory module.

    May your day go well.

the 6 beep codes will be in a specific timing i.e. two beeps, a space 2 more beeps, and another space and 2 more beeps.

Looks like it may be a memory problem according to the lights.

Six beeps at post and no joy with boot up

The exact meaning of the beeps for Dell depends on their... rhythm.

Six beeps might indicate a simple CMOS failure caused by a bad battery, which is easy to replace.

Optiplex wont boot

These file help to boot the system but good news is that you can fix it.through two methods.
1 fix the new boot record using Recovery Console.
2. repair the OS (recommended)
how to accomplish them.
method 1:
  1. Boot the computer using the XP CD. You may need to change the boot order in the system BIOS so the CD boots before the hard drive. Check your system documentation for steps to access the BIOS and change the boot order.
  2. When you see the "Welcome To Setup" screen, you will see the options below This portion of the Setup program prepares Microsoft

To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.
  3. When you are prompted, type the Administrator password. If the administrator password is blank, just press ENTER.
  4. At the command prompt, type the appropriate commands to diagnose and repair your Windows XP installation.
    • on this stage we shall make use of two commands, use one command at ago.restart the computer at every command.
    1. Fixboot writes a new startup sector on the system partition.
    2. Bootcfg modifies the Boot.ini file for boot configuration and recovery.
    Method 2:
  5. assuming method one failed, repent steps 1-4 and -->>press enter to install xp -->>press R to repair. this will repair the entire OS files and you will take the normal installation procedure. incase your stack don't hesitant to email me at arindabosco@yahoo.com

This is a problem with your memory.

During POST, the computer checks the computer's memory, determines the amount of installed memory, and then writes to and reads from the number of available bytes to ensure proper operation.
Basic Checks:
  • If an insufficient memory message appears, save and close any open files and exit any open application programs not in use.

  • Consider installing additional system memory.

  • Run the System Memory test in the Dell Diagnostics.

  • Reseat the memory modules.

  • Restart the computer.
If the problem still exists after you complete the basic checks, fill out the Diagnostic Checklist as you perform the following steps.
caution.gif CAUTION: Before you perform this procedure, see "Safety Information."
  1. Reboot the computer.
Does the RAM count displayed correctly match the actual amount of memory installed in the computer?
Yes. The computer needed to update the memory count. The problem is resolved.
No. Go to step 2.
  1. Run the System Memory test group in the Dell Diagnostics.
Did any of the diagnostics tests fail?
Yes. Contact Dell for technical assistance.
No. Go to step 3.
  1. Turn off the computer and peripherals, disconnect them from their electrical outlets, wait at least 5 seconds, and then open the computer cover.

  2. Rotate the power supply away from the system board.

  3. Replace the memory module(s).

  4. Close the computer cover, reconnect the computer and peripherals to their electrical outlets, and turn them on.
