How to program drum beats from one alesis sr16to another alesis sr16 drum machines

5.4J Copy a Song to Another SR-16 Via MIDI
The SR-16 can send Song system exclusive information to another SR-16 via MIDI. If you have only one SR-16, you can skip this section.
1. The source SR-16 should be in Song mode and stopped. Connect the source SR-16 MIDI out to the destination SR-16 MIDI in.
2. Select the Song to be copied.
3. Press and hold the COPY button, and keep holding it down until step (5). The display says COPY TO SONG.
4. Do not enter any destination Song number-just press PLAY to send the data out over MIDI. It will end up in whatever Song number had been selected at the receiver. If the Song was not empty, the new Song steps will be appended to the existing Song steps.
5. Release the COPY and PLAY buttons.
Caution: This does not transfer Pattern information, only the song steps. To transfer Patterns to another SR-16, see section 3.3D and 3.3E.

Hopefully this helps, it comes out of the SR16 Manual, page 40 I think
Cheers Pete

I'm trying to use the pads of my Yamaha DTXplorer drum kit as triggers for the sounds stored on my Alesis SR-18 drum machine. I have seen that Alesis markets a trigger module of their own which they...

Actually, ONLY TWO pins are used in the MIDI cable. The data is sent serially at a 31.25KBit rate.
You probably need to "map" the ones that aren't working into the appropriate codes to trigger the SR-18 sounds.

You need to COMPARE the codes sent from the DTX to those needed by the SR-18.

There also may be options in the DTX for type of drum kit such as "Latin" and selecting one of those may have the mapping already done.

In the literature of each device will be a list of the MIDI codes the DTX generates and those required by the SR-18.

essentially the percussion codes are NOT standardized completely between devices... but there is usually a way to "map" them to make it work.

you need to determine what midi note the DTXplorer is using for the snare, kick and 3rd tom, and set the SR-18 accordingly, or vica-versa. the midi notes for each instrument has to be the same.

if you cannot change the midi note in either unit to make them correspond, you can download a "midi mapper" program (i think e-drum might be one), there is freeware available if you search CNet. with a midi mapper program, you would have to get a midi/usb adapter for your computer and rouite the midi signal through a computer. midi mapping software allows you to change the midi note, when the hardware itself is incapable of doing so.

I need program settings for my sr 16

For most Alesis drum machines the best way to get programming is to find an identical unit and clone/transfer from it. Try a music store that sells Alesis.

A second possibility is to go to website(s) and download a SYSEX file to transfer via MIDI to the unit.

SR-16 gives message "ERROR: 01" when powering up

You likely have lost the internal memory data. This can be due to a power surge or that the internal battery has been depleted. The battery may need to be replaced.

You should reset the unit and reload the data, The manual is available online. Search Google for it.

The manual STRESSES the importance of backing up the data.

If you don'thave the backup, you MAY need to find another SR-16 owner to clone the data from.
