Question about Dell Inspiron 6400 Notebook

1 Answer

I Have a Dell Inspiron 6400 with Vista and It seems I am getting a memory or motherboard issue as the Caps and scroll lock LED's flash when I switch on and hold the FN key. Basically the laptop is not getting past Post. I have tried switching the Dimms out and trying them solo in each slot but to no avail. I bought a 1GB Dimm to see if that worked but that does not help. Is the way forward to get the motherboard fixed or is there something else I can do? Fixing the motherboard seems to be pricey. Thanks.

    Thanks for the suggestion.

So are you saying that there is nothing else I can try ? It is a motherboard problem??

Sorry but nothing from my orginial question has really been addressed.

OK. Thanks. My worst worries look right then.

I've contacted a local company to see what they charge but will likely go down the route of getting a new one and selling what I can off the old one.

    Cheers.

Getting the motherboard fixed may not be a cost effective solution.
You can salvage some of the components to use eg. the RAM and the hard disk.
Put the hard disk into an USB hard drive adapter case and use it as an external USB hard drive for backups etc.

The motherboard is faulty, it can't be fixed easily, they are usually replaced and the cost may not be worth it.

Hi
You probably have a mother board issue. Most likely the video chip. Take this to a reputable repair person or check my website www.micromendllc.com.

I have a Dell Inspiron e1505 laptop that just won't come on.

hi, your laptop led`s are also there for diagnostic purposes, if the caps lock and scroll lock (the one on right of caps) are flashing before going off, it means your system is not detecting the RAM so either your ram has failed or the motherboard is faulty

Switch on and the caps lock and scroll lock lights flash, but nothing else happens

Your memory chips are loose. remove and reinsert them. That flashing is an error code, indicating no memory. unless someone stole your chips from you, they are merely loose.

Inspiron 6400 doesn't start.

On Flash Flash indicates that no RAM memory is being detected. So remove both RAM modules, insert 1 at a 30 deg angle till the gold contacts cannot be seen, then lock it in place, and see if the RAM is detected. Test both modules in both slots, see if system will boot with at least one. If no change, try a new RAM module, if still no change, replace the motherboard

Dell Inspiro 6400 not starting up

If the Num lock is lit constant, and the Caps Lock and Scroll Lock keys are flashing, the system is reporting a memory error. Power off the system, remove the battery, and follow the user manual from support.dell.com to reseat the memory module(s). If the error persists, you may need to replace the memory and/or the system board of the portable.

Computer wont start

Turn off the laptop completely. Unhook the battery and ac adaptor. Go ahead and reseat the memory just to make sure its seated properly. Then go ahead and only hook up the ac adaptor and turn it on to see what happens. If that doesn't work then turn everything of and put the memory in the other slot and then turn the laptop on to see if you get video then, if not then your motherboard is bad.

The 3 LED's (Num Lock, Caps Lock, Scroll Lock) are used by Dell to diagnose no-post issues such as yours. The only error code close to yours is [Num Lock ON, Caps Lock FLASHING, Scroll Lock ON]. This indicates a a memory error. Try reseating the memory modules. If you have 2 memory modules, insert one at a time to determine the faulty module.

Dell Inspiron 600 Laptop, stop working.

This is generally a problem with the battery or a memory chip. Start by removing the battery and starting up on the power supply only. Dell batteries are notorious for causeing a no start. Then try removing the memory and try one chip at a time in both slots. If neither of these work, then I'm afraid you have a failed system board component, ans you will probably want to take it in for a professional diagnostics. Also, you can find a diagnostics light codes list for your machine at Dell's support site.
