Question about Sanyo Refrigerators

1 Answer

I own a Sanyo refrigerator Model SR 4912M. I have owned it for 2 years and I must have lost the papers. I bought it at Home Depot.Ever since I got it I've had problems. The Upper half is like a freezer -- everything we place in it freezes if its near or against the back wall and ice forms on that same back wall and I lose everything (food).I havent used it because of this problem but I want to keep this unit. I have turned the temperature knob to almost the off positoon -- and still no luck. Can you help? It's not a freezer but it's acting like one. Thanks.

Most times this is a bad cold control(temp. control knob) but there are other things to check for. Make sure the condenser fan is working and the coils are not covered with dust. A separated heat exchanger (small capillary tubing soldered to the large suction line ) can separate from one another and make the fridge run too long. - tape tubing back together. A poor working evaporator fan motor could also make the fridge run too long and freeze - replace the fan motor. An inefficient compressor or refrigeration system could make the fridge run too long and freeze - have a service tech check this out. A misaligned control settings, make sure the air damper and cold control have not been bumped and are out of normal settings. Stuck open air diffusers or air dampers are becoming more and more common for allowing too much air to be blown into the fresh food section and freezing things. On all frost free fridge's the freezer temp air is blown into the fresh food section, if you have "easy" to freeze items ( eggs, veggies in water, etc ) in front of or under where the freezer temp air comes out, they could freeze - store them in a different spot. Doors not closing properly makes the fridge run too long is the other thing to check for.

Too cold

Over time, internal parts wear out. If you made all of the manual adjustments to the thermostat control and it fails to raise the temperature accordingly, then it needs replacement. Contact the manufacturer for replacement parts and instructions.

What is the part number for the evaporator plate? because i accedently punctured the plate while cleaning it?

cant help you with the part # but i would try to repair it rather than replace it . there is a epoxy kit for refrigerators . about 10 to 12.00 dollars, and if the hole is not too large most repairs do work . you will have to vacuum the system and replace the gas . . the repair will be by far easer than replaacing the plate. hope this idea will help you . mm

Frost on compressor lines

make sure condenser coil is clean(dust, dirt free) then you may be low on freon(refrigerant) and need that checked, after you clean coils touch top of compressor head to see if its overly warm, thats a good indicator that refrigerant is low

Sanyo 4.9cu.ft. compact refrigerator heats rather than cools

I'd already picked up a replacement (B&D 2.7cf) before I found the website and asked the question,,,, hoped for a quick fix answer and I'd be able to return the B&D.... oh well. With 'designed' obsolescence and 'disposable' appliances, Robert L's answer confirmed my 'fears'.
Now I'm trying to find someone locally (Conroe, TX) who would like to 'recycle' the Sanyo (everything but the compressor/motor is in great shape - door, glass shelves, etc. maybe even the coolant which I don't want to 'dump' in a landfill.

Sanyo SR-4912M 4.9 cu ft refrig temp problems

Greetings macx,

The average refrigerator temperature is between 35 & 38 degrees. The maximum temperature a refrigerator can be before bacteria begins to grow is 39 degrees. It would be my recommendation to exchange this unit if you can at your local retailer. If this was purchased at Best Buy, you have a 30 day return/exchange policy on this item with no restocking fee.

Thank you,

Agent Dort
