Most of the time the engagement lever on the transmission cracks (at the bottom close to the pivot point where it goes into the case, look carefully cause it wont show without pressure on it)and the transmission simply will not engage. i fixed mine with a metal arm i made and no more problems all works a should. if they are going to make these under the troy bilt name they should at least make a decent lever for them.

I had the exact problem on a troy bilt mower. The wheels would spin when in the air but on the ground they would slip. On these mowers there is a plastic lever that the cable housing hooks to that engages the transmission when you pull the handle to make it go. The problem with mine was there was a bracket that stops this lever from traveling too far. In my case it was causing the lever not to travel far enough. I removed about 1/8 of an inch of metal from the bracket to allow the lever to travel all the way. Now the transmission engages and does not slip. Works great.... Hope this helps

I would suspect the cable to engage the self propel has either streached..or the outer caseing of the cable has slipped and needs to be adjusted properly..i hope this helps..Keith

How do you remove the gears on a front wheel self propelled troy bilt push mower?

Take the front tires off, pull gears and take out pins, put tires back on and you have a "non-self propell" mower.

Front wheels lock up when pull mower backwards

Typically self-propelled mowers are propelled using the front wheels, which only turn forward. Pulling the mower back while the front wheels are turning will damage the drive gears. It's best to raise the front wheels slightly off the ground before pulling back.

How do i replace a drive belt on a troy bilt self propelled lawn

You turn the mower over, remove the blade with a 9/16 or 5/8 socket. There is a bolt holding shroud on, 3/8 or 7/16, there are two screws by the rear wheels, 7/16 that need to be removed. Once the shroud is removed, belt can be removed and new one put on.
