The machine will not function. Turn the power switch off, wait about 10 seconds, and then turn on the switch again. If this does not clear the error, remove the power cord from the outlet, and contact your SHARP service center.

My brother mfc-490cw I can't send or recieve faxes.

According to the User's Manual for the Brother MFC-490CW:
  • Poor Line Connection indicates an issue with your telephone line (Page 136). If you are sharing the fax line with any splitters or computers, try connecting the MFC-490CW directly to the phone jack and send a fax. If you are still getting a Poor Line Connection error message, call the telephone company and have a repair technician check your telephone line.

  • Out of Memory error message means the machine's memory is full (Page 138).

Try pressing Stop/Exit and wait until all current operations finish and try again.

Try clearing the data in memory. To gain extra memory space. turn off Memory Receive (See Page 48).

Try printing the faxes that are in memory (See Page 49).

  • System Busy error message wasn't in the manual, but I suspect it means there's a current operation in progress and the machine needs time to finish before moving on to another job. Just wait for the current job to finish, then try again.

What does NG mean for Status after sending a scanned item or faxed item?

Hi,

Hi,
I can advise you on the 'memory full' problem, mate.

If you get a MEMORY FULL message while scanning the first page of a fax, press Stop to cancel the scan. If you get a MEMORY FULL message while scanning in a subsequent page, you’ll have the option to press Start to transmit the pages scanned
so far, or to press Stop to cancel the operation. In this case, send the fax by the Manual Transmission.
Depending on your typical faxes, MEMORY FULL errors can occur frequently. If this happens, change the Memory Transmission setting back to OFF.

Thanks.

Unable to fax full document

These units usually scan to memory then memory to phone, if there is a lot of items in memory then you may have to clear the memory, and try again, if this is a first, then the machine may not have enough Fax memory to complete the task. consult your manual, you can either add memory or switch the machine to fax directly on these jobs, this is slower than using memory but should get the job done.

hope this is of some help.

The screen keeps on showing " memory full".

To do this:

Press Function/Set, 3, 9.
This should take you to MEMORY TX
and MEMORY TX: ON?
Then press either the left or the right arrow (< or >) to switch on or off, and press Function/Set.
For the next fax transmission only, press < or > to select
NEXT FAX ONLY and press Function/Set.

This will mean you don't add any more to the memory and may be able to send faxes. There is a possibility that you will only be able to fax using manual transmission, but at least you should be able to use the machine to fax at all!

I apologise if the jargon is confusing, just try to go through the process one step at a time and you should be fine.

Hope this helps :)

Sending fax error message "low memory"

The fax activity logs or fax call reports are printing at inappropriate times. The fax activity log or fax call reports settings are not correct. Print a configuration report and check when the reports print. Set the appropriate log or report printing times through the control panel or the HP Toolbox. The volume for sounds that the device emits is too loud or too soft. The volume setting needs to be adjusted. Set the appropriate sound volume settings through the control panel. Fax send troubleshooting Use the information in the following table to solve problems that might occur when sending faxes: Issue Cause Solution Faxes stop during sending. The fax machine to which the fax is being sent might be malfunctioning. Try sending to another fax machine. The telephone might not be working. Do one of the following:
  • Turn up the volume on the device, and then press Fax/Send on the control panel. If a dial tone is heard, the telephone line is working.
  • Disconnect the device from the jack in the wall, and then connect a telephone to the jack. Try to make a telephone call to make sure that the telephone line is working.
A communication error might be interrupting the fax job. Change the redial-on-communication-error setting to On.

See "Changing the redial settings" in the electronic Users' Guide on the product CD-ROM. Faxes that are sent are not arriving at the receiving fax machine. The receiving fax machine might be off or might have an error condition, such as being out of paper. Call the recipient to make sure that the fax machine is on and ready to receive faxes. The originals might be incorrectly loaded. Make sure that the original documents are correctly loaded into the automatic document feeder (ADF) input tray or flatbed scanner (not available with the HP LaserJet 3015 all-in-one). A fax might be in memory because it is waiting to redial a busy number, other jobs that are ahead of it are waiting to be sent, or the fax is set up for a delayed send. If a fax job is in memory for any of these reasons, an entry for the job appears in the fax log. Print a fax activity log and check the Status column for jobs that show a Pending designation. All of the numbers of a long fax number cannot be dialed. The maximum number of digits of characters that can be entered into a fax number is 50. Try manually dialing the fax number. Faxes that are sent include a block of gray shading at the end of each page. The original may be on the flatbed scanner (HP LaserJet 3030 all-in-one and HP LaserJet 3380 all-in-one only), with the glass-fax size set incorrectly. Make sure the setting is correct. See "Changing the default glass-size setting" in the electronic Users' Guide on the product CD-ROM. Faxes that are sent have data missing from the end of each page. Lexmark 5400 incoming fax job wont print

from the Lexmark website:

This issue occurs when the user sends a fax using the flatbed scanner. After the first page is scanned, a message is displayed asking if another page needs to be scanned. The user options are YES or NO.
  • If the user chooses YES or NO and the fax starts to dial, they can safely press CANCEL without inducing the problem.
  • If the user presses the CANCEL button instead of answering the question, all future received faxes will go to memory instead of printing out. NOTE: There is no direct means of recovering a lost fax, but unplugging the machine and reseating the power supply will restore normal operation. An error report will be printed and provide information about the lost fax, which may allow the user to contact the sender and request that the fax be sent again.
