Question about Singer 5050 Mechanical Sewing Machine

The tension on this maching is seriously out of wack. when trying to unjam the mess from the bobbin area the entire bobbin housing came out of the machine. we can't get in back in and if we do the bobbin thread will not come up and it will no longer sew. it appears to be jammed.

Specific detail on bobbin case adjustment (with picture) near halfway down reply, the remainder will help you achieve a balance of top and bottom tensions.

Ensure that all is clean and free of lint and jams, this is the most likely cause....now for tension troubleshooting .......

This solution is for tension problems...if you cannot form any sort of stitch, the issue is quite different, so please let me know if you need a different problem solved.....

It is quite long, but just work through each section in order.

The "knotting up" can reveal a lot. If you have loose threads on one side or the other, the tension on the opposite side will be the culprit.

QUICK SUMMARY FIRST:
Ensure sharp new needle,
Thread guides and Bobbin are Clean & Clear of lint
Set Top Tesion to 4 ....then....
Balance Bobbin to suit.

TOP THREAD TENSION:
If the looping threads are on the underside as you sew, it is the top tension. Top tension ought to be between 4 & 6 (this variation to allow for the different weights of fabric in your projects).

IS YOUR NEEDLE SHARP ?
If you are using a needle that has seen quite a deal of work, or you suspect it may be blunt, change it for a new one !

TOP TENSION & GUIDES:
Make sure that when you thread the machine the presser foot is up so the thread goes between the discs and not to one side, top tension between 4 and 6, and that you have threaded through all the guides, including the last one, usually on the needle arm, just above the needle clamp.

It may be there is lint trapped between the discs, this will keep them slightly apart and reduce the actual tension, sometimes dramatically.

If tensions appear correct, and the thread is definitely in the channel between the discs, but still too loose and looping, try raising presser foot and remove your thread.

Now, with a 2" (50mm) wide strip piece of fabric 8 - 10" (20 - 25cm) moistened with methylated or denatured spirit, gently insert the fabric strip and clean between the discs with a see saw / to and fro action.

In the worst cases, gentle use of a needle to pick & remove the jam may be necessary, but be very gentle and make sure the tension is set at Zero and the presser foot is raised, (to disengage tension plates).... do not gouge or score the plates, they need a polished surface to work correctly.

BOBBIN TENSION:
Far less common, but if the loose threads are on the top, it is bobbin tension that is loose, it too may have lint in the spring and be giving a "false" tension.

I would not recommend fiddling with bobbin tension without good reason, it may end up with missing small screws and spring pieces, however, you can take the needle plate off to clean
the hook race area (where bobbin case sits)

...this is just good housekeeping, my wife does this every time she replaces the bobbin....

just take it out and clean the bobbin case and the fixed metal hook race with a small brush to remove lint. If there is a significant amount of lint, use a vacuum and small brush to get the worst.

Then wipe all this area with a cloth or cotton bud (Q tip) moistened (not soaked) with methylated spirit, especially if there appears to be fine dirty deposits....oil and lint combine to conspire against you.

If it seems likely that you ......really ....do .....actually .....need .....to adjust the bobbin case, first check there is no lint trapped in the metal spring where the thread is tensioned.

TOP LOADER:
Drop-in Bobbin case will look similar to this image with the tension screw in the middle of the metalwork....

the tension on this maching is seriously out of - 4c76dc1.jpg ...the other screw at one end is holding it all together, so beware....it is not a tragedy to undo the whole lot and clean it, but very gingerly and lay the bits out in sequence and orientation, or you risk tearing your hair out !

FRONT LOADER:
....this is a bobbin case from a front loading machine and works in a very similar fashion to the top loader with drop in bobbin, again, if you dismantle it, take care so you can put it all
back properly.

GETTING THE BALANCE RIGHT:
When you are certain there's no trapped lint in top tension or bobbin, set the top tension to 4 and the bobbin tension to a point where you just begin to feel resistance.

Try using good quality thread of contrasting colours so you can more easily spot the changes.

Set your zigzag to one width less than maximum (eg. 5 of 6 ...or... 4 of 5 etc) and sew a sample for a few inches and check the result.... adjust the bobbin tension screw very little at
a time, perhaps 1/16 of a turn.

You may find you are playing with this balance for some little while and if you are putting the needleplate on and off each time begin to think it cannot be correct to do this.....BUT....it is,
and eventually, you do get a "feel" for the correct tension and then it happens quite quickly.....as a user you won't be doing it very often unless there is lint built up (or are there small hands at work around the house !?!?!)

OTHER ISSUES:
If you live near the ocean as we do, salt air can play havoc with metalwork inside and out, so to help minimise this, keep a few small packets of dessicant (silica gel) in your machine
case....no case ? then make some sort of cover !

Same applies in any damp or humid environment, keep your machine dry and dust free.

Budget for a proper full service every couple of years (more often if heavily used) and if you don't use your machine for a few years, be aware that old oil will dry out and combining with
dust and form a "clag" like glue (another reason for some sort of cover, even a teatowel !)

FINALLY, A WORD ON THREAD:
If it is worth spending the time, energy and money on making something that you would like to give lasting enjoyment......use quality thread, .......it may seem to cost a little more at the
time, but the results, ease of use and added longevity will be worth the extra, and as a bonus, your tension troubles may be fewer and further between, because there is a more consistent diameter with good thread, and less compensating to be done by your tension plates and less thread breaks

1. You need to remove the bobbin case and adjust the tension. The tension should allow the thread to move with a slight tension. Clean the area with a qtip. The bobbin case sits in a an area that is called the race. The race needs one drop of oil. Replace everything.
2. Replace the needle. Make sure it is in the right direction. Thread the top while the foot is up. If the thread gets stuck while threading there is a problem. The thread should move easily while the foot is up. After you thread the machine except the needle you can put the foot down. Now pull on the thread. It should give you a slight amount of tension. Usually four is a good number. If the tension is too tight you can adjust as needed. Now, thread the needle. Hold the thread under the foot while you turn the hand wheel. The bobbin thread should come up.
3. Give your machine a try with a slow speed.

My top thread is getting tangled up in the bobbin case area, even when hand turning the wheel with the bobbin and case removed; trying to fix a serious tension problem.


First, install a brand new needle.

Remove the thread from the machine. ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot and rethread from the beginning. Verify the thread path is correct and that the bobbin is loaded and threaded correctly. Set the top tension to the midway point--you'll probably need to tweak the tension for your particular machine.

Bring the bobbin thread to the top of the fabric (manually with the handwheel). Then gently hold both thread tails in your left hand while you begin to slowly take the first couple of stitches.

If you are still getting thread barfs in the bobbin area, your machine may be out of time. Search for sewing machine timing or take it for service.

I have a kenmore made by Janome model 385.19106900 and just recently started getting a bad tangled mess in bobbin area and thread breaks, I have changed bobbin,needle threaded rethreaded changed tension...


Check the upper tension discs for lint: Raise the presser foot to open up the discs and blow or 'floss' between them. Any lint or thread in there will prevent them from giving the proper tension.

Thread setting out of wack; bobbin thread won's connect with "too loose" top thread


Your tension adjuster is either set incorrectly or needs repair. Bobbins also have a tension setting, though it is not often necessary to adjust them. If they do, it's usually done by turning a tiny screw a very tiny amount. Best to mark the original location of the screw so you can reset it if need be.

Clean out all the thread, clean the bobbin case area thoroughly, a soft brush is good for this, as lint buildup can cause jamming. Set the upper tension around 3 or 4, and try turning the hand wheel slowly to see if the upper thread picks up the bobbin thread properly. If not, adjust the tension again. If you cannot get it to make a nice even stitch, the tension adjusting mechanism may be in need of repair.

pl open the entire bobbin housing two scrwes with suitable screw driver and clean .test the latch on the bobbin case,look for steel tension strip screw replace the unit ,also replace needle

The macine said it was an E6 error thread jam which I completely cleaned the bobbin area (not much there anyway) but I still cannot get it to not jam the thread on the botom. I have changed needles also.

This code tells you that the motor locked up because the thread is tangled. Untangle the thread, make sure the machine is threaded properly and that the proper tension is set before continuing.

It could be that the bobbin is being put in upside down check to make sure that you do not need a bobbin with a magnet on one side. also make sure there is no thread tangled inside the bobbin housing it will cause the timing of the machine to be off and cause issues with your needle picking up the bobbin and thus cause a mess inside you bobbin housing

You can call different fabric shops to see if they have a repairman that does house calls.

The machine may need a total tune-up and this requires shop time.

In the mean time - set the top tension at 4 and then thread the machine with the presser foot up.

For the bobbin, use a contrasting thread for this test.

If this is a rotary (vertical with metal bobbin case), insert the bobbin into the case so the thread is feeding clockwise and through the guides on the side and of the case.

Take hold of the bobbin thread tail and if it falls like a yo-you, you need to tighten the screw on the side of the bobbin case so the bobbin thread does not pull out while being held in said position.

Make tiny adjustments to the right.

If the bobbin thread is so tight that the top thread is pulling to the underside, loosen the screw ....tiny increments to the left.

Once you have the bobbin tension set, do a test stitch and the top and bottom stitches should be balanced.

Too much bobbin thread on top, loosen the top tension - lower number.

Too much top thread on the bottom, tighten the top tension - higher number.

Well, I could have written this. I bought a used model from a repairman about a year ago. I have a Model 537FA and I'm going to throw it out in the rain leftover from TS Fay if I don't find some kind of help. :) I'm thinking it's a tension issue, but I can't seem to find a fix.

Does your tension on your top thread sometimes tighten to impossible to move in the middle of sewing. I know that mine does this and it causes the top thread to break. I don't know what's causing the bobbin mess.

Maybe someone will help us? Please!

Bobbin case catching-tangling thread


It sounds to me that you might have the wrong type of bobbin in the case. The top of the bobbin should not be higher than the case. Thread will slip through the space and cause problems. Also unevenly wound bobbins will also cause this symptom.
Or your losing tension which you will have to adjust tighter.

HI Leaann! I have solution that may help!
I inherited an old Singer 457 (from 1964!) from my Grandmother. I used it a few times with success but then I too started to get birdsnests on the bottom of my work or knots in the area the houses the bobbin.

After much fiddling, using different bobbins and spools of thread, tension and what-not, I discovered that the it was one particular plastic BOBBIN giving me trouble! Although it appeared the same size and width, there is something about this bobbin that will mess up the machine (and within 16 stitches).

I just tossed the thing and have been trouble free ever since!

Try changing out your bobbin, the problem may resolve itself.
