Ps3 plays for 5-10 min then freezes restore format and utillity but still it freezes is it the laser ot do i need a new hard drive

40GB and 60GB 1st Gen PS3 consoles are notorious for faults with the Blu-ray lens. With your warranty more than likely expired you will not get a replacement. With no support offered for older versions either I suggest buying a newer 'slimline' version. Bigger hard drive, support offered and more reliable.

Yup its your laser. You need to try wiping it off wih qtip and rubbing alcohol if that doesnt work just replace the laser. Ps3 lasers are the most expensive though due to blu ray.

There are 3 main causes and solutions:

Software Issue (Restore the PS3 to factory settings via Sytem, Settings, Restore PS3

Dirty blu-ray lens ( take the PS3 apart and clean the laser eye carefully with a DRY q-tip.

Faulty / Failing blu-ray drive ( check and secure all of the cables to the blu-ray drive)

If the issue persists then more than likely you'll need to swap the blu-ray laser out with a new one.

There is only 1 Torx screw on the entire system, the rest are all phillips drive. All you will need is Q-tips and rubbing alcohol. When cleaning the actual lens DO NOT press very hard and try using a rotating/twisting with the tip of the Q-tip.
NOTE: KES-410 (dual eye) lasers can sometimes have a bad Bluray and still play CD and DVD movies.

If by "restored my ps3", you mean you have run the Recovery Console, then your Blu-Ray drive may be the culprit.
Return your PS3 to Sony for repair.

in this case if your out of warranty open your console and clean the laser with iso alchohol and a q-tip re assemble and see what it does if it still has the prob call a company called innex and order a new laser

yo dude i have the same problem as u like im playing cod4 wen i exit a match it freezes wen i play guitar hero 2 that also freezes while playing a song i think i know sum ways. its either were playin to much u need to buy 1 of those disks that clean inside the ps3 or any dvds its like a special disk it just goes inside and u play it and it takes like 5 min cuz none of my games have scratches
