Does it make the noise even when disconnected from the computer? Try to unplug it from the computer but leave the power connected (if it is a model with separate power and data connection) and see if it still makes the noise.

If it does then it is a hardware problem and it will need repairs. If it doesn't then its something in your software attempting to talk to the scanner incorrectly. You can try reinstalling the software for the scanner to ultimately test.

Scanner won't scan. the light is on but the scanner part won't move. makes a lot of noise. the belt is not brokern

depending on the scanner the belt may not be broken, however the gear that it rides on may not be moving, or the belt is slipping. Some scanners the glass can be removed for you to visially see the gear and evaluate from there

My Lexmark 8350 won't copy or scan. It appears that there is a problem with the light under the glass - it doesn't move when the printer tries to copy or scan. I tried to take the printer apart...

If you have already tried unplugging/replugging the printer into the power outlet in the wall to reset it, then I would strongly suggest you to contact Lexmark technical support for additional assistance. It's not advisable to take the printer apart as it would cause further damage if not attended by a professional. I apologize if I didn't have the exact answer that you wanted.

I have an AL -1540CS Sharp copier and it won't scan. The tray under the glass move a little but then it seems it is binding. It sounds like the machine is stripping gears. At first I had a L1 code, I fix...

Sounds like your scanner rail is gummed up. Just follow my insturctions in the link below which is for the L-1 code you had previously. If it helps you to resolve your problem please return here and rate my solution.
Thanks.

Copier flashing error message

You did not provide the make and model of copier but this code is common among Sharp AL series copiers which are sold under various models. I have pasted my tip on the solution for this code so it should work for you.
L1 or L1-00 indicates Scanner movement failure. The scanner is the part under the glass that lights up and moves back and forth. So if you lift up the feeder so you can see the glass, turn the machine off for a few seconds then back on. Watch the movement of the scanner. It should move right and inch or two then back to the left. If all goes well the copier should come to ready. Lay a piece of paper on the glass and press the print button to watch the scanner movement. If it binds up or does not scan correctly there are 2 possibilities.
1) your scanner lock is engaged and is preventing the scanner from moving. Check the clear plastic dial located under the far left upper side of the copier, near where the paper exits the machine. Make sure it is in the unlocked position.
2) Your scanner rail is dirty and dry. This rail can be seen under the glass towards the back of the copier. The scanner rides on this rail. It is very common for these to get dirty and for the grease to dry up causing the scanner to freeze up on the rail. The glass must be removed and the rail cleaned and lubricated.
Just power off then on the copier to reset.

Scanner error - I've plugged in, reset partial, reset semi, disassembled and cleaned bulbs (both working) and optics, moved to different outlet, checked power supply, put unit in warm room, but still get...

On the top of the scanner mechanism, there is a black tab that gets caught on the underside of the scanner surface, just beyond the glass, towards you. You will hear a gear grinding sound, that"s the tab getting caught. either bend the tab down, or remove it. Its on the black cover that"s on top of the scanner mechanism. Also remove any tape that is on the bottom of the trailing cable under the scanner that prevents it from moving all the way to the left.

Sounds like a shorted wire or something grounding.
Slide out range and unplug and take off bake and look around for a short either at the bake or broil element ot at the terminal where the cord connects.

Epson Stylus NX105 scanner started clicking when turned on...

I dismantled the printer because i've been having the same issue. It recedes to the right and begins clicking because it is at the end of the track. For some reason the scanner isn't registering that it is at the end of the track and keeps persisting making the gears jam up on the other end because they obviously can't move any further. Any suggestions as to how to fix, or master reset?

Flashing L & 1 and will not copy

L1 means the scan carriage (the thing with the bulb and mirrors on it, under the main scan glass) is not moving. It has either been bound up by something or the motor is not running it anymore. On the left side of the machine (facing it) check to make sure the scanner lock has not been turned back on/re-engaged (it should be in the area where the paper comes out and lays down in the exit tray - up under there).
Otherwise... remove the glass and make sure there is nothing binding up the carriage - try move it by hand. make sure the carriage wires are ok. check for any loose cables getting in the way. is everything clean inside? If the carriage is locked up then the drive motor may be the issue - it could have seized. you could disconnect the drive motor and see if the carriage moves freely.
Also you want to make sure the white reference strip under the glass and all the mirrors/bulb are clean.
Hope this will help.

sounds like you've lost a tooth from a gear in the scan drive, most of them are plastic, it will only need one tooth to break to make a clicking noise. If you can see which gears rotate as the scan moves, examine them very carefully. Can you gently move the scan by hand?.Do you feel any resistance at the point where the noise starts? If so , check for obstructions, like position sensors bent/damaged

HP Officejet 6110 scanner carridge appears stuck

Unplug the power. Plug back in, while simultaneously holding hash (#) and (6) buttons, until S-reset is displayed (sometimes this can take like forever) but it is a documented HP mode.... Then set up machine using 1 key to confirm options and arrow keys to select options.

To enter another maintenance mode (fat lot of good that will do you), press and hold * and #, then press 1 and then 2 and then 3 (or 5) for a variety of different options, which include testing of the scan bed. This of course only works once the scan bed has initialised...

Or: take out all cartridges and close doors. Wait until it complains, or indicates a cartridge jam.

Regards
All-knowing.
